early 997 cooper head

hey all , i have just found a 12A185 / AEA626 head

reading from the exhaust side of the head behind the stat houseing it has stamped

S.522

A.V 19.7.

its been ported quite well and has really odd domed valve faces.

anybody got any ideas who did it??

Alexander were very keen on using domed valves,

A. V19.7 could also point in this direction too, but I don't know for sure.

I assume the other number is a job number Number (No: 522)

As I say, this is assumption based on the fact I have had a number of Alexander heads & most have had domed valves at least in the exhausts.

Oh, by the way an AEA626 head should be a large bore 1070 S head, not a 997 Cooper head.

That sounds like a genuine Morris Engines modified head .

Is it 9 or 11 stud ?

Is it drilled for a heater tap or is the casting blank ?

well its a small bore 9 stud casting.

yes there is a heater tap take off, i will take some pics

this is pretty much what i thought as to the meaning of the numbers, as for alexander i hope so mark didnt you have an alexander head for sale?

I did have a Alexander modified 997 Cooper head for sale. But from what Simon says he recognises the numbers.

An AEA626 is definitely a large bore head, so I can only assume that this one is a small bore 12A185

well the head has 12A185 hetween the centre rocker post moorings and AEA626 between the stat houseing end two.

ive got what i beleve to be an early downton 185, but is is lacking the AEA number.

so it being genuine Morris Engines modified head meaning it was a factory devlopment project?

oh yer, i have just knoticed it doesnt have a temprature sender hole below the stat houseing.

The factory did this to try to confuse us. Two completely different heads with the same casting number 12A185. It's very obvious which is which. I have owned a couple of 11 stud 185's both of which ended up in Simon's shed. I still have some 9 stud 185's.

Yes, but this one is a small bore and has the AEA626 too which should refer to the big bore head. Very confusing.

Its the AEA626 that I find very confusing!

I have seen & know about the confusion re 12A185's & have seen examples of both, but I have only ever (before this week) seen large bore heads with an AEA626 casting number on them.

Sorry about the rubbish picture, its the only one I have handy.

This one that was on the first forum was for a 948 engine and had the AEA626 too. Looks more like a small bore casting, but still not close to littler's head. So, are there 3 versions of AEA626?



As for the other head, the numbers do look like downton.
