Changed a dpa fuel pump on an Austin A60 as an apprentice about 50 yrs ago. Very slow about 40bhp but good economy for its time

Re: B-series diesel
The reason for asking is that a friend of mine ownes an engine shop. One of his customers came in with an 1800 boat engine with a cracked head.
I've got a 1500/1600(?) tractor engine and I was wondering if anything was useable.
I'd love to build a 948 turbo diesel MK1 though :8

Yes people had the misfortune to drive a diesel sherpa. I don't know about land based engine, but the marine version had a nitrided/ tuftrided crankshaft.JohnA wrote:I think they fitted the 1800 diesel to the Sherpa range

Tufftrided crank.........i ground plenty of them in the 80's.ivor badger 2 wrote:Yes people had the misfortune to drive a diesel sherpa. There was also Cambridge and Oxfords that had the 1489cc diesel version. Most were taxis...very rare cars now. Skin and rice pudding comes to mind. Then there was the 948 A Series diesel that was used in the BMC Mini Tractor, ( export only ). About 15bhp ! Only saw one crank for those, i think they had 2" mains instead of 1.75". Bit of a failure, so the later tractors also used the 1489cc B Series diesel.

Re: B-series diesel
My cousin had one in his boat. the crank needed reground abroad, so the guy reground it, which turned out to be a bit different to normal. The crank grinder then looked for bearings which were unavailable, but still wanted paid. He was told, get bearings and you get paid. My cousin ended up with a new crank in his aircraft baggage allowance, OUCH!Daves 8 port wrote:Tufftrided crank.........i ground plenty of them in the 80's.ivor badger 2 wrote:Yes people had the misfortune to drive a diesel sherpa. Re: B-series diesel
Oh yes..........we always ground to the undersizes available ! Sometimes a standard crank, mainly one that was quite old, would have to go to 30 or even 40 undersize as that's all we could get.
Another annoyance, for me anyway, was Vauxhall Viva 1147 & 1256 cranks. They had a "flange main", whereby the thrust washers were integral with the actual shell bearing. Quite a few would wear the thrust faces on the crank, nearly always the rear one, and all undersize main bearings had a thrust width that was 60 THOU oversize..............
