Not great with the old shrapnel in the eye though.. if i where you id get some decent goggles that are like swimming goggles! The last time i got some metal in my eye it went behind the safety specs then in.. your right not a great feeling.. plus having the bit picked out your eye with a hypordermic needle is not pleasant at all. First and last time it will happen to me! you might look like a dick wearing goggles but you get the last laugh!

no photos, no progress, but....

epic news...


after four months of nagging, lost documents, been told various different things etc i can report that.....


647 HAT is on the DVLA computer and i have a new V5C in my name!!!

this is a QUALREZULT!!

dont ever listen to anyone who tells you that just because a car doesnt show up on the DVLA system and has a deactivated old style V5 that it will need the full bells and whistles inspection to get the old reg back and what not - not true.

ive never heard of anyone having to go this route, or having a deactivated logbook, but (bar loosing my documents once.....)the DVLA have been 100% decent and professional about this matter - ive always said, be straight and reasonable with them, and you will receive a decent helpful service.

even better is that the plate is transferable - not that i intend to sell it, but the 'number plate is none transferable' always speaks of past problems on a vehicle record.

for the first time since it was registered in 1964 the chassis number also appears correct on its paper work - it previously started with a 'H' thanks to an error when the green log book was filled in.

i do have to report, however, that the DVLA have made one tiny, tiny mistake (no, its not down as a cooper s....)

my top tip for anyone with anything other than a basic dealing with swansea is to take your documents to your local DVLA office and get them inspected and stamped there - this starts a documented path, so if there are any problems later the local ofice will get involved (and will accept scanned/faxed copy documents - not something that the main DVLA at swansea would do easily.

Just read your thread and I'm impressed with the speed of work. It's not something I have ever attempted, and most likely never will. I liked the original owners pics and that old Hot Car article, I used to have that issue, but alas it is long gone now.

So they didn't make you go down the V765 route then?

I might have to make some enquiries, as im hoping to get mine on the road by May, and I was slightly concerned on how long it all takes.

less than 10 minutes after the lady at DVLA told me that the V5c was sorted I checked the online thing and it showed up.

this has just arrived

expensive, but the rh is so rotten it makes sense from a time point of view to use this rather than faffing with a horrid lower corner repair and having to make small repair sections

my eye is ok, its stopped watering all the time and jumping in and out of focus :shock: , but i think there was another tiny bit of 'something' that had got stuck under my eyelid.

ive been pottering on, just havent had the camera handy

They are definitely worth the money. Im the same, I never look at the invoice, it just gets files away. :lol:

Ive just fitted the second one of the panels, and both sides seem to be very tight on the bottom corner.

It'll be interesting to see how yours fit, more than likely its my panels fitting skills that have let me down, rather than the panel. :(

monster update comming. not so many of the 'here is a new panel getting welded in' sort as there are plenty of other peoples projects with the same pics - ive tried to take pictures of some of the other stuff.....

first, the passenger side is comming on, the door fits about 98% right, with a little bit more tweeking it will be there - im not 100% happy with the lower qtr repair, i joggled the edge, but it wasnt deep enough to sit flat with the original metal of the rear qtr - it will finish up fine though as the qtr has a 'ice-berg crease' a bit higher up and a medley of other smaller dents to sort, so its going to have to have some filler.

the passenger side has stopped for now though, i did repair the scuttle, but on closer inspection im going to replace the lower portion - the drivers side is so bad it makes sense to do the whole thing. im also pestering the people who make the front panels to supply me with just the inner parts, as these are all that remain welded to the front of the inner wings - it seems a bit wastefull to buy a new panel just to harvest these!!!

take no notice of the heritage wing, thats a red herring, i simply used it to make sure the scuttle corner and a panel where in the right place, so it 'would be' possible to fit a steel front (not that its going to happen!!)

the engine is a loose and should be out, however as i kindly lent my engine lifter to someone (who hasnt returned it (cough cough!!!! ;) ))ive not yet had the chance to get it out!

for now though i decided to get the drivers sill done - just looking at the rotten, bulging mess depressed me, so i decided to get it done

a week off work, a new pair of safety goggles 8-) 8-) , what could go wrong? - well, plenty, as it turned out....

first, the drivers side top part of the sill was very tired, but provides the datum for lining the new floor up - i had to remove the welded in inner sill to clean the edge up for the new floor to butt up against.

i started to chop the cover sill, and the remains of the original sill out when i made a quality discovery........

thats right, newspaper sills........ :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

a previous owner 'mr x' has very carefully jammed balls of newspaper through the rotten outer sills, pop riveted bits of metal over them and then slathered underseal over.

the most amazing thing is that this repair must have passed at least two or three mots (the good old days eh??? :lol: ) before the yellow crayon made its mark - then the next owner has simply welded the inner and outer cover sills over what was left - the paper didnt even catch fire, but i suspect it was well damp by then!

with a little care the paper could be unfolded out, and was still readable in places

its also pretty cheap to rent a flat in brum, just a little more a week than a rally jacket!!! houses where priced from 1500 - 6500 grand as well

i very carefully laid all the paper out to try and dry it, but it was soaked with oil (or something), a stray spark from the grinder set fire to it and it burned like that paper magicians use - gah!

after spending a whole day chopping mess out / reading a paper thats older than i am, i cracked on

i welded a brace across the door gap to keep the (rotten) door step in place, then,

i didnt get as much done as i wanted as there turned out to be a small problem with the floor repair section. the bends where not quite right in it, but it didnt become apparent until id lined it all up, measured it and chopped the floor. it was only when i tried the cross member end in that i realised there was an error. i then spent a full day cross referencing measurements from the untouched mk2 shell i have to this one and tweeking stuff until it came back to an acceptable shape - it took a lot of pulling and tugging, and a bit of recutting and welding, but its back right. ive had a long chat with mini machine and they have found as much as an 1/8th of an inch varience in untouched shells!!!

ive remade the bottom edge of the cross member so thats in, but will need to shorten the companion box a little to get it in the right place.

thats next week

Top quality repairs there. I don't suppose the Corrosion Assessment "hammer" would have been required on that sill. :lol:
