Sounds like some casting numbers - not a proper part number.
On SMF a chap is looking for a 2A628 or 12A1456 for an 850.
Thats the sort of number to look for and should be cast in the top face (under the rockers).

update, turns out to be a 12A1456, just fitted today with the kind help of Colin. Nice way to spend bank holiday, but it was fine in a dry garage. Original intention was to go to Castle Combe for Mini Racing before the mishap, as it happened though it got cancelled due to flooding on the track. Roll on Blyton for my fix

12A1456 is the standard early Mini 1000 head with a hole for a temp sender. The 2A629 is very similar but without said hole. I found a NOS 2A629 at Newark auto jumble recently. It is destined to be fitted to a mate's Frogeye Sprite.
