My thoughts were also perhaps a Mini-Ford engine with that style of rocker cover?smithyrc30 wrote:Looks like a Ford cross flow to me. Block does not look right for an A series.

Re: 1980's Mini Racing Photos
I'm surprised you didn't recognise her as she's now (nearly) a household name. Although to be fair, she was a lot chubbier when she was 19 (in 1991) than she is now. The boyfriend was a very talented Formula Renault driver who eventually ended up on the scrapheap as he liked a drink a bit too much. He is now a landscape gardener but also works for the (old and the forthcoming) Top Gear production teams. He's one of the three or four pro drivers who stepped in for JC to do the high speed power sliding bits.Maguire Mini wrote:Just by chance I kept the Triple C Magazine pages that covered Rick's season in the MG Metro Challenge 1983, just had a quick read and I am really surprised he wasn't more competitive, as his car was set up by BMR, who set up many of the front runners in the series and he had a Longman engine, a race Metro was a strange animal though and didn't suit everybody.YMJ wrote:That would've been it. I might add that Triple C gave a formula ford season to Tim Harvey ( he crashed it -breaking 1or2 limbs and never drove it again). They also gave away a drive in first season of Formula First to a young lady driver who,s name i cannot recall , anyway she did a Harvey and crashed in the first round of the championship, I happened to be visiting relative in queen mary,s hospital , Sidcup when said driver was brought in-as i was leaving she was coming out of casualty still in Nomex but sitting ina wheelchair wearing a pair of white foam ward slippers i told her how much i liked her QUALIFYING BOOTS but she and boyfriend seemed to have suffered humour failure! i would like to add that nobody without experience of competition ever won a Triple C comp. Good job too looking at how well that lot did.
By-the-way, PB only includes the top spec in his race cars if PB is the one doing the driving.
And I know who that lady driver was...... She's now doing extremely well at something else.
Go on tell us who the lady driver was.

Re: 1980's Mini Racing Photos
Sorry.... from 1990 so it may not count, but interesting points to note......
1. wet tyre merely replacing smashed up wheel/tyre after colliding with boxing great Joe Bugner's nephew, Shaun at Copse
2. Genuine 1960s F1 team jack being used to support crashed vehicle. Now stolen but I know who's got it (a collector who has hidden it away in his loft and gets it out to "look at" every now and then, probably).
3. Full head of brown hair
4. ability to bend both knees at more than a 90deg angle
5. borrowed Sparco nomex underwear, suit and Sparco boots
6. broken nose courtesy of a Mr N Jeavons, of Moseley RFC sustained a week earlier
7. The damage did actually bash out and car was ready to race at Cadwell a fortnight later
8. would NOT race in a car these days with that seat and that spindly looking roll cage
and finally
9. The Daihatsu pick up in the background was employed on more than one occasion by my father to gain access to Silverstone (including the 1991 and 1992 F1 events) free of charge, by throwing a lawn mower in the back and pretending to be on the landscape maintainence staff!
