7 port head

Post by su_mark »

I'm thinking of building up a race spec 1293 (maybe 1380) with 7 port head.

There seems to be a few options on the heads. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge/advice?

MED, Webcon, Minisport, Specialist Components, (anyone else?)

Help appreciated.

A mate of mine has used the SC one & it works really nicely. The ports are pretty much equal & the standard of finish was excellent. The biggest drawback was it was very soft. I assume it had not been heat treated after machining.

The Minisport / Danish one, has one major flaw the massive difference in inlet tracts between the inner & outer inlets.

I have no experience of the other 2 you mention.

But as has already been said the Manx 7 port always gave superb power, I think there is a certain Beardie weirdy who has a very nice one tucked away somewhere.

I had surprisingly good results from an Alexander 7 port, but finding a good one is almost impossible & they were really designed for small bore engines anyway.

I have recent experience of a Manx seven port . I used twin 45s with 36 chokes , 649 cam etc . As for performance what you will notice is the extra torque it gives and just that nice bit of extra grunt when coming out of a corner . ... Ken

the big advantage of the manx over the other heads mentioned above is that its legal to use in many applications as its based on a standard casting

a very rare bit of kit

The SC head will give the best results. But it is a s Rich says quite soft aluminium. I've used large washers on the head studs to spread the load. Ultimately you end up with a few helicoils in it.

I'm close to finishing an SC 7-port 1430 build and so far I'm very pleased with the apparent quality of the components.
I can also say that it's pretty pleasing to the eye!
