Has anybody got a design (preferably period) for a bracket to mount Lucas 700s as high as possible for road rallying?

I think those are bang on period for the 70's/80's from the road rallying days but I've never seen any 700's mounted high up any other way. The smaller 576 types were bolted through the bonnet, but I'm sure you already know that.

If you need a set of those shown, drop me a PM. I have a set in the loft of my garage I could send you and if you get on with them, you could see me right on the rally for beer money!!

Ok cheers guys, that's great - i presume you just omit the lower set of lamps that would now be illegal on rallies?

You do just leave the bottom set off.

If it's going on a MK1, you may well need to trim the underside of the mustach as they bolt to the front panel face and on top of the bumper lip, so you need to space up the bumper a little. It does mean you can run the deeper Cibie lamps too, which are easily available reasonable price second hand (I also have around 8 of them from my Escort and pug days in the 80's!!)

I'm going down the early quick release brackets as per early works cars. The position is not as high but I think it is more in keeping with a 60's car. I wanted to put the full, 4 lamp bracket on as per the later works cars, but I'd have to unbolt the centre 2 for each event.

Do others run the 4 lamp set up and just leave covers on the centre 2 or do they have to be removed for the events??

Most run just the two lamps Dave but if they have a bank of 4 then two are covered up/otherwise disabled to comply with the regs.

I too have some of those early brackets but there were plenty of rally cars running around in the 60s with lamps mounted higher up the grille than they would allow without being modified.

Any ideas anyone?

Just make 3 spacers(stands) to bring your lamps above 24', and use the works(ST)type.

Tks Ronnie, but i'm not sure what you mean exactly (i am a bit thick like ) - are you suggesting i utilise the early quick release type ST bracket and then make up a spacer for each to bring the lamp to the desired level? If so where does the 24' come from and why three spacers for two lamps?

No I mean the works 4 lamp type, but if you make (to use the term stand pipes) 3 off threaded top and bottom to raise the bar to the correct height (but don't forget if it is not a purpose made bar and is a ST or comp's copy you will have to use the outside holes if you use 7" dia or over lamps).

Niall, if you are thinking about going rallying seriously I suggest that you forget about the Lucas 700s, even though they do look dead right for the car. From my experience you might as well stick a pair of candles on the bumper. After trying various combinations of Lucas lamps I settled on a pair of Cibie Super Oscar driving lamps aimed straight down the middle of the road, with the headlamps turned out just a little to each side.

If we're talking about the UK that's not correct - an auxillary lamp (ie a spot light) that goes out when you dip the headlights can be at any height.

As far as I am aware the regulations have not changed ie as quoted in previous post and any light above 24" must extinguish with dipped beam max legal height used to be 29" or 30"For as you say car headlights, aux lights can be mounted any height but I believe technically illegal to use. if they exceed the max height.

OK tks Ronnie, i get you now. However, i don't want to use the works type bar rather summat that'll achieve the same effect as the brackets on that pic. without the need to cut holes in the (mini minor) grille .

Steady - the 700 lamps are for looks more than anything else (i have another mini that i rally) but i was going to upgrade them by fitting H4 bulbs. Tks for the advice though and nice pic!
