Re: Colour picture KEL236
and thats a great photo too! Looks like Pukekohe near Auckland.
In the photo I posted (pinched from Donn Andersons excellent book Mini Down Under) the mechanic on the far right hand side of the photo looks like my wifes Uncle Len. He was a mechanic for McLaren that season and remembers the special engine - I think he said it went back to the UK - but I will check with him. Len prob had either his Cooper 500 or Cooper Bristol around this time. He had a Maserati 250F after that which he later sold to Chris Amon.

Correction to my earlier post. My friend David contacted the owner of the Indy Cooper and he said it did come back (tax reasons!) after the race and was demonstrated at Brands Hatch and perhaps Silverstone. So this photo could be from any time except 'the month of May" when Indy is on.
He also said people who know say its not Christabel Carlisle - have to eat humble pie there.

Amazing to think McLaren travelled half way round the world to try and get a competative drive at the age of 20, was only 23 in that photo ,had already won a grand prix and by the time he was 33 had lost his life at the same circuit. Talk about 'live fast die young' !
Here's Patty with the Cooper he raced at the Australian Grand Prix in '62. the only time he raced a Mini as far as I know.....wonder if that's the mother-in-law ?!
Cracking thread this.
What colour scheme is the morris cooper here. Looks great.

I read somewhere the Oz GP Cooper above was sent out there for the race but it looks very CKD doesn't it ?
The Goodwood photo was taken in April 1961.

Its definitely a Oz assembled one - they had lots of unusual colour schemes and had standard upholstery - you can see the rear seat in the photo.Surf 1275 wrote:I read somewhere the Oz GP Cooper above was sent out there for the race but it looks very CKD doesn't it ?

Looks like an Aus CKD car to me, the first 2000 or so coopers have UK and Aus car identification, I have a smoke grey and Cherry red car (needs resto). I suspect that this is the colour scheme in the photo.steve1071 wrote:

Could equally be 'English Grey and Cherry red' like Micks car down in Victoria...
(Doors and arches are later additions)

The green racer certainly looks UK manufactured, which is probably the car I read about. More antipodean colour schemes here.......

Morris's did come out with some strange colours now and again. Here is the limited edition Morris Minor, to celebrate one million Minors produced, in lilac!
That Morris Mini is an overseas market one it looks - they had all sorts of colour ranges I think.
