Early Sills & Foam
My van has it's original smooth sills.
I'll need to do a couple of patches on the inside and outer sill ( not bad enough to warrant replacing ....not even sure if available )
Will I be able to fit a modern front floor panel with this type of sill?
Also....WHY did they put foam inside the sills?? I'll need to somehow remove foam from the area of welding

Re: Early Sills & Foam
The foam was an attempt to cure the water leaks, the sill design change was another. Both wrong!

So how does one remove the foam in the area of a weld?
How about floor size….?

M machine do full floors to early spec, so I presume they do repair panels as well. The foam will have to be cut and scraped out I think,

Re: Early Sills & Foam
No easy way to remove the foam. Just open up the sill & scrape it out.
Make sure you weld it with the doors of the garage OPEN! The smoke is very toxic indeed!

The welding will need to wait until spring now anyway, as leaving the door open will be out of the question.....soon to be -35...yikes

Yes...I'm in SK
Still a balmy -15, but will do nothing but drop until Feb at least....so even today...no garage doors left open...lol
Regarding the inner sills....
I've email Doreen at M-Machine asking about the floors ...no reply yet ( although she did reply to my initial email, but I wasn't clear with my questions)
Yesterday I've found that I need the inner A panel on the right side...aarg. Luckily I have an outer on hand..I'll have to get an order together for a shipment of parts from the UK

Re: Early Sills & Foam
-15? -35??
Chrikey, it was 36, that's +36 here yesterday and now, first day of summer, it's headed for +40.
I seem to recall that Acetone or paint thinners 'melts' the foam, I've not done it myself.
So, do the new floors & sill still lap the wrong way?

I'm not sure...I don't have any new "fluted" type panels to compare.
Mine come up smoothly from the floor....floor and sill are one stamping, no welds

Re: Early Sills & Foam
Acetone does melt it, but it just removes the air (bubbles) and the stuff still sticks to the panels unfortunately so you have to scrape. I have used acetone and then a hot air gun to get the residue away but the whole sill was off so it was easier to get at. Not tried paint thinners... Toluene and Xylene are not nice stuff either (highly carcinogenic) which is paint thinners...Spider wrote:

What with our Petro dollar in the skids it may be cheaper to pull from Hunters stock out of Victoria?? Saying this, I need to order some Moke and perhaps Estate panels. Hunters don't stock Moke. I wonder if it would be cost effective to combine an order into one box, even with us being two provinces apart?

Re: Early Sills & Foam
I'm not sure about Craigs supply of panels…..I mean, if they'll work for me.
Even though the $ is in the tank….may still be more cost effective to put in an order at Minispares or M-Machine……..if ordering enough to make it worthwhile that is.

The new 'early' floors and sills still lap the wrong way for originalty.Spider wrote: So, do the new floors & sill still lap the wrong way?
ie. the floor is one piece including the smooth outer sills and the inner sills are seperate panels lapped onto the floor inside the car.....any water that gets inside the sills drains under the carpet! (the foam filling was a stop gap measure supposed to stop that happening).
Most of my foam filled sills have had far less rust and lasted better than later cars but they are of course a pain to weld when repairs eventually become necessary.

The part about the foam was helpful....suggesting clearing it at least two inches away from any weld area.
When I get to it, I will get as much out as I can as I don't have a special mask for the fumes
