Mk1 850 (1963) Austin Speedometer

Post by 111Robin »

Thought I'd check the speedometer on my car was correct, seeing as it's all listed in the new book, but I'm not that certain. It looks as if pre '63 Austin has a thin needle versus the Morris wider one. However for '63 on the book just states the speedometer should have a silver face, there's no differentiation between Austin/Morris. The part number is correct per the book (SN4480/00) but it has the wide needle. So were there still different speedo's on Austin/Morris after '62 or were they all the same and if so which is correct, thin/thick needle ?. (I knew it was a bad idea buying this book.............)

See, I thought it changed when the SDL came in and the cars got the three clock dash with the black speedo. Like I put in my November 1961 to replace the obviously incorrect Mk2 item it came with. I've now obtained what I think is the correct cream face with thin red needle no tenths version. But I could still be wrong!

For certain though, the fuel gauge is wrong on that picture.

I didn't even twig that the fuel gauge was black, must have been replaced by a later one at some stage. Well spotted.

It depends on which model of '63 you have. Standard Mini has silver face. SDL and Coopers have a black face.

It's the basic 850 so silver is correct, just not sure about the needle type.
