A distinct lack of current state photos make it seem more suspect too. Does really look like something is trying to be hidden. Taking 10 extra photos would have taken absolutely no extra time or effort

One photo that always seems to be missing from these 'works car' auctions is anything in that fifty year gap between the 60s rally shots and the current car.

Why on earth given that the Comps Department had their pick of cars from the production line would they have chosen a surf blue car - they wouldn't. Nor would they have reshelled it in a surf blue shell. If the car was sold after it's rally career rather than being scrapped ( like BOO 911F) the OUTSIDE might have been repainted. It is pretty clear therefore that the car for sale has no connection with the JMO identity apart from somebody having stuck it on the bonnet ( and even then they didn't even bother to get the right font). I agree that given the complete absence of any provenance Coys should withdraw it....

Now maybe the buyer knew full well that the car was built purely from a number plate (as described in Peter Browning's book) but you could hardly say it's an accurate description.

These are the "weasel words" for DJB

"commissioned a total restoration to original Works specification". "A correct and fully restored Mk1 body shell was employed,"

In all fairness Phil Short NEVER claimed that DJB was anything other than a replica, the first time I am aware of, of this particular fact being "skimmed over" was in that auction blurb.

Whichever way you look at it, that was a lovely mini.

No Phil was fairly pragmatic about it, especially as it was already in print as a recreation in the Browning book. I've never heard it referred to as a replica though, literally ever, more chance of an actor talking about Macbeth! The trouble is with these things is that one owner down the line and it's suddenly become a 'works car', as it was described when it was driven at Goodwood.
Would you get on the rally stage at Goodwood with an honest replica? Nope! So deceiving the public does open doors and that's why it happens. Oh and the small matter of the £100K price tag that a so called "works car" suddenly attracts and a replica doesn't.

What about the 30+ events Rob Lawrence did in the car?

I'm sure I read in "Memory Lanes" Motoring News book by Peter Robinson, that Rob rolled the car and had to re shell it (ill check it out tonight) maybe as a long shot he used a Surf Blue car to reshell it, and that was the car that was then used as a base for the clubman fronted Hill climb car then a round nose drafted on to put it back to Works spec !!!!

The Mini van listed on that site is nowhere near as well restored as may be indicated - sold for circa £6700 last weekend. New floors but cover sills What the hell is going on with the brake pipes

Good luck to the sellers trying to make a quick buck doing bugger all, but come on, be honest with your descriptions

This is clearly a 1979 Mini Pick-up given a 1962 identity. How do dealers get away with this and who would pay £15,995 for such a poor deception? My friend is going to email them and ask did the Mini Pick-up have a steering-lock and dual-circuit brake system in 1962

A nice late 70's pick up, although it looks like its got oversills on it like that van. Don't lift the bonnet though - thats horrible. Interior is not brilliant either.

As you say, not a hint of a '62 pick up there - tax exempt special, as we call 'em

Thinking that my current pick up, also going to be Tweed Grey, would look great with Minilife alloys

I think the brakes on that van are potentially lethal as there is no brake limiter at all in the system and wouldn't be surprised if the split system is all wrong. So much for paying attention to even the closest of details !!!

The previous owner tragically died in an accident at his premises earlier this year.

The Cooper is a genuine Mk2 Cooper and was restored by himself, for himself. He changed the colour for personal preference and I guess converted to dry as well. Once restored, he used it a few times but then preferred his MGB Roadster and hence why it hasn't seen any miles since. When I last saw him earlier this year, he was planning on selling it anyway.

So it's not the car I have any problem about, its the bullshit description given by the current seller who give the impression of being Mini experts

Same goes for that van. Caveat Emptor on that one for sure !
