"Year letters were not compulsory until 1965 (C reg), so a vehicle may have been registered during 1963 and 1964 without a year letter."
http://www.cvpg.co.uk/REG.pdf

(I also remember my dad bought a brand new 1964 Ford Zephyr without suffix).
It was not about year letters being compulsory in 1963/1964 ,All the authorities were allocated x amount of registrations , If they run out then they would use the year letter A 63 , B 64 and of course it became standardized in 1965 all would use a C.

9748KO was registered in March '64.

Kent was still using pre suffix up until Jan '65. Have explained this on more than one occasion at cars shows

I suppose those seat brackets are going to be thin on the ground as most people didn't bother to cut them off when scrapping an early shell. I know I didn't about 20 years ago. Got loads of the (worthless) later ones of course.

But trying to fake a '59/60 shell is going to be tricky, what with the non-recessed screen apertures, so I can't see too many takers.
...of course those that re-shell can really mess it up sometimes - Poole Quay Minis on 10th July 2015 there was a 1965 'Cooper' (well, that's what the badges and chassis plate said), but the shell was a 1959/60 with non-recessed screen apertures. It also had a 1990's Cooper interior so a right mash up. On the plus side it was in great condition even if in IMHO rather charmless...

Interesting colour scheme for a MkII

This one, at the same auction, seams a better bet

Didn't stop to see these cars sold yesterday but ......

The FY Mk2 belonged to a late friend of mine - a genuine Mk2 Cooper, colour changed to suit his own preference - actually inspired when he saw my 'S' 8-)

The Mk1 was, by the looks, a genuine Mk1 Cooper but the shiny paintwork looked to hide quite a lot of potential future bodywork. Some of the welding left a lot to be desired.
Nice car though (for the right sort of money) - be interesting to see what it made.

The Mini van made £6700 I think - was not worth that IMO. Had new half floors and then wrap round sills :? Again, nice shiny 2 pack paint covered a lot of not so good bodywork.

The X reg S works made £11K plus buyers premium :o :o Nice looking car with excellent, original bodywork BUT a quick look at the MOT history website revealed no MOT and failed on emissions in June 15. :?

There's one reason that won't make much Murph - it bounced off every branch of the ugly tree on it's way down to that pile of leaves!
