Hydro Pipe Protection

Back in the mists of time (the early 90s when I stripped my car), I seem to remember some sort of horrible tar coated thing wrapped around the hydro pipes to protect them from the clips. Needless to say, I can't find these. Can anyone confirm what they were and looked like? Has anyone got a load - 10? If not, what is the preferred replacement. Chopped up bits of fuel hose will look a bit gash....

If the proper parts aren't available (I don't know if they are) then could you use black heat shrink ?

I don't think you'd get heat shrink over the ends of the pipe. At least not a size that would be shrink down far enough to hold onto the hydro line.

Self-amalgamating tape might be another option?

You could use black spiral bind intended for binding electrical cables. Comes in different sizes.

I've used it on the fuel pipe for my pick up and will use some on the brake pipe in places to help prevent chafing.

The originals I've seen were green when cleaned up and were cut spiral fashion and then wrapped round.

Spider - the daft thing is I rang Somerford and asked if they had any hydro pipe protectors. They sent me a small packet with ten pieces of heat shrink tubing in it. I could see the big roll of heat shrink tubing across the room at work when I opened the parcel.... The picture you found on their site is how I remember them.

The original protectors were greenish translucent...semi-transparent....
I have found some lab hose that is close...bit darker and less see through.

Oh, so they only supply crappy HS tubing these days? Well, that's a bit of a poor show. It has been a number of years since I bought some, though it was only Hose (though smaller diameter) with a nice spiral cut through it. I don't know if they were genuine, but I guess some of this stuff has to start drying up sooner or later.

I made my own, go to your local camping shop and buy some green plastic tubing of the correct bore and cut as a spiral. Good luck..

Yep. That's the P/N on the invoice, but what you actually get is 10 bits of heat shrink.

I thought what I removed looked like the spiral tubes but were made of bitumen coated sound deadening mat or similar. I bet all sorts got used. Spiroband or tubing as you say would be a good call. Really as long as you use something it should be OK. Not as if you see these is it? Are all other pipes protected from the clips i.e. brake and fuel lines?

Spiral bind is easy to use but not sure if you can get it in green.

I've used it on both the fuel and brake pipes on my pick up. Not sure if that is original but seems a good modification.
