White wall tyres.... ?

Post by sandman »

On my Heritage certificate it states that the car was delivered with "White wall tyres".... was this a factory option?
Anyone know what make/type of tyres they were in 1960?

Is it possible to buy white-wall 10" tyres today? And if so - where?

Many thanks,
Cheers,

Yes BMC offered White wall,s - I have a few Mini Super brochures, and they have this option.

I havent found any 10" crossply tyre with White wall :(

What i have found is a place that fit White wall,s to normal tyres, but they only do it on new tyres.

You can also get the whitewall Atlas inserts, but they normally wear into the tyre and cause problems.

I stuck some inserts on my '63 SDL before going to Beaulieu in 2011, On the way down one of them came off the rim. I refitted it when I got home. A month or so later I noticed that they were starting to wear slight grooves into the tyre sidewalls so took them off. The only other option is to get some tyre paint, but I have never tried it so can not comment on how it performs.

I think white walls look good on the right car (Super, SDL, Beach Car etc)

We have a local franchise that applies special rubber paint to produce whitewalls, redwalls (very 70s:) or whatever colour you want in pretty much whatever width of band you want...

They did a presentation at a club meeting ... but I don't think they made any sales :).

Maybe try Google??

The problem with painted on whitewalls is tyre staining. The same as when chemicals leach out of the tyres into the paint on garage floors. I was looking at the tyres on a vintage caravan today and was wondering why it had brown-wall tyres. It didn't, it just needed another coat of white over the top.

Also the guys here who do white walls grind out a thin layer of the tyres to get a flat surface. It's actually illegal here to modify the tyre construction, so I wouldn't recommend that either.

Those "stick-on" ones look just as "cool" as the boy-racer
black-out window tint film, complete with air bubbles...

Does anyone remember the white crayons you could get to paint in the lettering of your ordinary tyres so they looked like expensive American tyres?

Yup, & IO can also remember spending ages colouring in the Good Year lettering on my tyres, only to see the lettering disappear in no time flat.

Needless to say, I only did it once.

Late 60's early 70's Halfords used to sell white Tyre paint in small tins. it was very like Latex in a tin. ;)
