Equipe Arden.

Post by Austin Costin »

As many of you will know, I have been restoring the 69 saloon car championship winning car. The car built and prepared by Arden engineering and campained by Alec Poole.
It had a great colour feature in Motor magazine on Nov 22, 1969 (which is on the mk1) taken at Silverstone when it was passed onto the new owner Mary Donald soon to be Mary Carney, the car as I understand was bought for her by future husband Jim Carney who also bought the winning Broadspeed Escort, both cars then came out to New Zealand.
It had a new 999cc, eight port, TJ injection built up by Arden as the winning engine had been sold to fellow New Zealander Barry Phillips.

Mary raced the car in 1970 and became the first lady to win a New Zealand championship round in the car, she even beat Barry Phillips who was running the championship engine fitted to his car, Barry Phillips also became the next owner of the Arden car.

Greame Farr has a wide knowledge of this car and it's NZ history along with many pictures which I hope he will share.

Austin,

How is the restoration going?

It would be great to see a picture or two.

Do you know if the original engine is still in existence?

Austin, I think I have a Castrol mag, with your car on the cover in 1969. I will check and you can have it if you don`t already.

and finally met blue again painted whilst owned by Jim Maude who sold it to current owner who also ownes the
Jack Brabham championship F1 T45 Cooper of 60 or 61?

I will post up more as I go.

I would love to have any pictures, info or anything to do with this car as I now feel very involved with it, I have only recently had the permission of the owner to share pictures and details of the car.

Pete it would be fantastic to speak/mail Alec Poole in any way, his name will be back on the side of the car tomorrow for the first time in 31 years 8-)

Yes they are 7x12, but the car is going back on 12" rosepetals, the first set were almost square so we had to find a second set,

Yes, it is a great opportunity, to be honest I tried to buy the car but was told that it was NO way for sale, I asked what was happening to it and was told that he was looking for someone to restore it for him, so I put my best foot forward and got the resto through the company I work for, Upper Classics.

The car is very nearly finished, some more of the signwriting was done today, I am still waiting for the engine that is being built by Lynn Rogers of Aukland who has been building winning engine's since the 60TS, he also builds Angus Foggs V8 supercar engine who posts on here as Foggy.
The engine is going back to saloon car spec, stroked 999 Arden 8 port with TJ mechanicl Injection but is not going onto a 5 speed colotti box as this has caused more than it's fair share of damage over the years.

I was hoping to put up picture's of the car in order but my computor skills are limiting me at the moment so please bare with me and I will endevour to get them up in some sort of order.

This is the car No 86, this time owned by Barry Phillips in the new colour red/ white stripe sponsered by New Zealand freighters.
