Clutch alignment tool for early Mk1 (Coil springs)

Post by Rich997 »

Hello all,
Could anyone recommend a clutch alignment tool which is suitable for the early coil spring clutch?
I've seen plenty of 'universal' tools around, but some indicate they are not suitable for early Mini clutches.
If anyone has a proper BMC tool please let me know, I would be interested in buying or borrowing (Cheshire)

Cheers,
Rich

I've done a few of these recently including the quite stiff S type. If you remove the outer bearing thrust plate, fit the spring seats using the three nuts, assemble the clutch backplate, friction plate, flywheel and springs, then fit the cover, and either use a press, or other ingenious method of your choice, to start the cover retaining bolts a few turns. Once they are all started you can centralise the plate by fitting the flywheel assembly to a crankshaft. Tighten the cover retaining bolts with the flywheel on the crank.

I hope you can decipher this, and it helps

Hello

I changed my clutch on my mk2 cooper a few days ago,

You don't really need it,

Fit the backplate, the flywheel and the clutch together but dont tighten it,

Fit the assembly on the primary gear/crankshaft and after you can tighten the 3 bold that holt the diaphragm on the backplate,

Good luck

I have never used one either. I just build the flywheel / clutch up on the end of the crank.

EASY!

I do the same.

But, if you really do want to build it on the bench, use the Primary Gear to centralise the Plate ;)

Thanks for the advice.

Building up the assembly on a spare crankshaft seems to be a help when fitting a clutch with engine in the car.

Either way it looks like a precision tool is not required.
