Fibreglass matting for rear firewall

Post by SMOKE GREY »

Fibreglass matting seems to be sold by weight. Anyone recommend what to go for firewllaing rear parcelshelf, seat backrest etc :?:

It's not like steel, where you'd only put one layer.
It's not unusual to build up several/many layers to get the required thickness.
Lighter grades of g/f are much more flexible to work with so I'd tend to choose the weight by how flat the area is - if you need to get tight radius curves or intricate shapes use a lighter cloth than if you're just making up a flat panel.

They do a woven tape or mat which makes a tidier job rather than chopped strand.

I just used one of the off the shelf 'kits' from Halfords, seemed to be plenty in there to do the job.

I did the same as GraemeC. Buy one of the complete kits from Halfords, one kit was just about perfect for one rear bulkhead.

just a thought (so you may have smelt burning) what about exhaust heat wrap if your intending on puting it on the areas that enter the boot area from the rear seat? i imagine it would make a nice job on finishing the edges, plus you know its prity good at resisting heat! ;) iv used it with resin in the past and it looked nice and was nice and strong too
