"Always a key feature of any Goodwood Revival, this year March Motor Works will closely resemble a mid-Sixties London Mews-style garage for the 18th year of the event’s running. As usual it can be found adjacent to the Earls Court Motor Show building and the Richmond Lawn.
The machinery will be presented by the BMW Group and will include some breathtaking examples from Rolls-Royce, BMW and Mini.
March Mews SW1 will house a Rolls-Royce display with a remarkable Silver Cloud Countryman as its main feature. The Countryman was a very special motor car which featured just about every luxury extra produced by Harold Radford Coachbuilders Ltd. When we say ‘extras’ we’re referring not merely to the likes of electric windows, but instead crystal wine and water glasses, picnic tables with stools, towels, hangars, hand-tufted carpets, cocktail cabinets, a wash basin, electric kettle… We could go on, but these and the rest of the Countryman’s appointments make it arguably still one of the most exclusive cars on the planet and we absolutely cannot wait to see it.

As special as the Rolls-Royce is though, it might be potentially upstaged by another product of the Radford Coachworks.
"In 1963 the firm announced such a thing as a Mini de Ville; the most opulently-equipped of which came with a full-width fascia, speaker balance control, enhanced lighting, electric windows, a centre arm rest and full leather interior, lambs wool carpets, soundproofing… As with the Countryman this was a vehicle oozing bespoke luxury. It came as no surprise that these very special Minis soon found homes with such luminaries as Peter Sellers, Paul McCartney and Steve McQueen."

Jim Cumberland's old car which I also think was a 1071, has a split folding rear seat :

Interior colour and style looks very similar to the Peter Harrison Radford.

I bet there'll be a few ex Radford/Hooper/W&P staff members there over the weekend, hope Steve remembers to get their details, golden (and possibly never to be repeated) opportunity for some good info there! That coach built Roller of Keith Richards in the auction looks a stunner, bet that's got some stories to tell and probably has a few surprises under back seat, and I don't mean BICs!

I had never seen one of those aerials until I started looking for one for BRI, since then, I have seen about 4 or 5.

Weird isn't it.

I know when we've talked about Beatles' Minis before on here a few times and the story about George and John having acid slipped into their tea at a party held by their dentist and then going home in Boyd's Radford Mini, well Lennon recounts the tale here on a collection of interviews he did with the Beeb.

on Youtube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YlFTzTkSsE

Or the full hour long collection of interviews which was aired on Radio 4 on Sunday to commemorate what would have been Lennon's 75th birthday ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06f4xm2

(had it on in the van coming back from Combe, how the miles flew by!!)

The Youtube clip goes into the story straight away and Lennon reckons it was George driving them home completely stoned in his Mini, not Boyd. Does it matter? Not really, but any excuse to talk Beatles really! :D (Actually taking that particular brand of sugar cube in their tea pretty much changed they way they wrote music, She Said She Said and Walrus being only two great examples!)

I've always taken things John said in interviews with a pinch of salt Pete, his memory wasn't the best back then! The 'Mini based acid trip incident' happened in November '65 though, when did Patti or George take delivery of the Radford..? It's possible they were driving their 850 Mk1 'GUU 707C' at the time though.

By the way, I've seen all sorts of steering wheels on Radfords of different ages in contemporary photos, Formula, Springall and Moto-Lita. What was the crack with those, ...Nev?

Derrington wheels were fitted in the 63 and early 64 cars and from there after they were generally fitted with the formula wheel. Any other wheel would have been fitted at the request by the customer.

Some colour shots of the interior ( showing steering wheel) - this is a different incarnation of R1000 with the longer headlamp peaks and a different steering wheel. Very swinging London - looks like Hammersmith. Fantastic bubble car (Trojan/ Heinkel/ Isetta) in the background - but what is the other car?

Fantastic period photos, lovely stuff - looks like it could be Hammersmith Road but further up towards Kensington Olympia (looks too wide to be King Street where Radfords gaff used to be). I drove along there on Sunday morning and a lot of the older buildings have sadly gone now.

;)
