Early 1071 Head bolt

Post by Nevsmini »

Started stripping my July '63 1071 engine tonight, only to find the bolt by the thermostat different to the norm. See pics below of the normal S head bolt and the early one. The tread size is the same and bolt length is also the same. The head of the bolt is 9/16" instead of 1/2" and the shank of the bolt is a lot thicker. Anyone come across this before on an early 1071 S engine?

I don't know Toby will have a look over the weekend. Have you ever come across this?

I suspect yours is a non standard replacement. I have had a good number of 1070's some of which were very original & complete & I have never seen a bolt like yours.

It's a very original early lump. Original head block on 190 box etc etc. water pump has been changed all right, so I doubt it was replaced but it is possible, but why would you change it ???

Toby no markings on top.
