Historical Magazine Classifieds

Post by Flygirl »

One thing I love about swap meets is the quantity of old magazines that are for sale. I can never resist buying a few for the archives! The cars for sale section is always an interesting read.

Here is an advert from "Thoroughbred & Classic Cars", December 1981:

Any current pictures of this car?

Even some of the more 'recent' ads make you realise how much things have changed when it comes to our beloved little cars, I was thumbing through an early Miniworld the other day and came a cross an ad for a restored Mk1 850 that was up for £1,400! What would that buy you these days..?

I'll post some shots of JMO shortly, quite a variety of appearances through the decades!

Must have 1 or two taken in 1982 at the IMM ( Mini treffen ) in Luxemburg.
Hope to find them in all those picture books.

Thanks Pete, great photo history.

I should probably know this, but why was there so little in the way of advertising on the Works cars? Was there a restriction on promotion in that manner?

1968 was the first year advertising was allowed in UK motorsport. I think the same applied to FIA events and most national European events. Scandanavia seems to have operated to different rules...
In the case of BMC Comps, the financial situation was such that they probably wouldn't have taken advantage of it earlier on anyway. The Ford and Rootes UK works rally efforts might have looked for such financial help earlier if it had been allowed. They would certainly have been somewhat envious of BMC's Comps then budget (or absence of anything recognisable as a "budget"...).
Possibly Castrol and Dunlop had no agreements in place in 68 to make BMC carry their logos now it was allowed.

The entrant's name was allowed pre-68 (Team Lotus, Owen Organisation etc. in F1) and I always felt BMC's "Safety Fast" sticker was stretching it a bit.

Here's one I found the other week from the 90's. Why you'd buy a brand new mini at the time for 5000 pounds when you could buy these??
