Tank strap mounting

Post by Daz1968 »

I am in process of restoring a mk2 cooper and it has had repairs in boot floor before and I need a little info about the mounting to floor of the tank straps, is there a captivated nut in the floor for this and if so anyone have any pictures, also my car has a genuine right hand tank that I presume was fitted later, would this have a captivated nut or would it simply be drilled through floor and bolted, the bulkhead mounting is bolted unlike the lefthand side which is spot welded to bulkhead,
Thanks

Well I'm sure its a "Captive" nut on the left tank! on the right my 68 S has a non-captive nut and yes the bulkhead bracket is bolted on with 1/4 nuts and bolts.

The left hand side has a bracket 14A 6565 with a captive nut+cage spotwelded to it. The original factory spec twin tank cars had a smaller captive nut bracket fitted on the RH side. I made my own RH bracket to match the other side. The holes in the boot floor are in the same position both sides.

Mine is missing after a replacement bootfloor (no evidence of it on the old one!) even if its wrong I strongly suggest you fit one! It's a pig of a job without a captive down there.
