1962 Morris Mini Super seatbelts

Post by rickmk1 »

Hi all.

I continue restoring my Mini and I have a doubt with the seatbelts. It is a 1962 Morris Mini SUper 850. Export deluxe. Built in september 1962, VIN number MA2S4 SL 147103.

My question is if it has seatbelts as original equpiment, and in case it had, if they are two or three points.

My car has the holes and the threads in the floor that look original, but in the pillars it has a hole and a nut welded but in this case I am not sure they are originals as the job is not really pro.

What do you yhink?

Regards

Ricardo

I think it extremely unlikely that belts were fitted. Victoria, Australia was the first jurisdiction world wide that demanded seatbelts as an OEM item..... and long after 62.

However, early Minis (maybe from the beginning?) include the mounts to allow owners to fit aftermarket belts. Early cars had the top mount right at the top of the B pillar but by 64 (my oldest Mini) this had migrated lower down to improve the fit of the top strand of the belt.

Cheers, Ian

Hi :)

they all had the holes for seatbelts, here is pictures of another 62, where you can see the factory holes.

Some moved the factory hole in the B post down, so you wouldnt get strangled, hence why many cars have several home made holes.

My 1962 deluxe has holes but they have plugs in them that are painted body colour. In uk any pre 1964 car doesn't require belts for mot so I opted to leave as it was mainly due to originality.

Thank you very much for your answers.

My holes are not in the upper side, they are slightly lower, about 6 cm (2,4 in). Probably they have been moved for better comfort.

As all of the Minis had the holes, I will keep them and try to fix the repair to look better. I will ask in the bodyshop what can they do. Then I will see if I fit two or three points.

In Spain they were not required, but as in 1990 was necessary to drive the cars, most have had them installed with aftermarket seatbelts. The only legal difference in using 2 or 3 points is that with 2 points speed is limited to 75mph (120 km/h), not a problem with an 850 engine. Then is the security....

I will post some pics of the car when work advance a little bit more. Now is mostly a dirty job
