SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Hi folk,
I'm going to make an abutment plate for my H4's because despite his best efforts, Mark has met some supplier problems. I have a few drawings and an abutment plate to copy but someone has mucked around with the throttle and choke connections. Can someone please explain what the 11B543 distance piece that sits in the 11B542 pin does. It appears as if it may grip the outer choke cable but that would be very odd !!
Regards
Al

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Hi Ronnie,
It all seems very Mickey Mouse to me I take it the distance piece comes up against the shoulder on the pin and provides a pre-determined grip on the outer cable ?? Odd, you would think it would have been better to partly drill the pin so that the outer cable bottomed in it !
Is the distance piece threaded onto the pin?
Maybe you can help with another question. The throttle cable fitting on the abutment plte I have has been sawn off, probably to clear the air-cleaner. However, it doesn't seem to align to the throttle arm too well. I have viewed quite a few photos and it seems that few people use this cable position, most seem to route it from the engine side. Any comment?
Thanks for your help and regards,
Al

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
I encountered the same thing when i fitted my H4's. The choke fitting bites on the outer cable and whilst it works it ain't the best. Every time you undo it and refit it has kinked the cable. Bottoming out would be far better. As regards the throttle linkage I am afraid that appears to be out of line but in fact it works fine on my car. All told it would be better to manufacture some abutment brackets with these factors taken in to consideration and is something I might have made up albeit at the cost of originality. I will try to post some close ups of my set up for you later on today. cheers. Mark

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
The choke cable clamp shouldn't damage the cable unless it is tightened up too much & the "Throttle cable" spigot . . . . . Isn't.
The throttle cable is held by a "normal" throttle cable bracket that fits to the inlet manifold, its only there as these brackets were originally used on something else that may have used this spigot.

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Mark is right, you need to be careful when tightening on to the outer choke cable or it will kink.(as you might have gathered that happened to me on the first attempt)
There is a fine line between getting it to hold still and not overtighten though. A spigot type arrangement might be an improvement or alternatively perhaps fix the existing barrel in place so you don't have it trying to totate as you tighten the nut pinching the outer cable?? Cheers

Hello chaps,
Would it be possible to have some close up photos as I am about to built a similar set up ?
Thanks Etienne

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Hi guys,
Is the distance piece threaded onto the pin or does it simply slide on and is clamped against the shoulder on the pin?

Al

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Just a 3/8" hole the cable is all that stops it coming off ( if you are after originality), by the way Al I have seen a very original works car which had it's choke cable fitted, similar to your Idea of part drilling the pin.
As Mark stated you dont need to use the throttle cable stop, but it can be utilised if you wish. some of the ST demonstrator's used it I think you will find that the ST throttle cable is long enough, but you just increase
the internal friction in the cable with the two (reverse) bends.

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Thanks Ronnie, I've got a pretty good idea what to do then. I will make a distance piece and slide it on but I'll make the outer cable bottom in the pin. Is the diameter of the distance piece around 1/2" then?

Al

Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Yes the pins are 3/8" dia 5/16" unf thread and I think probably 5/8" OD for the spacer, I can measure one today if it is that critical to you (after I finish work 07-00 BST), If no one else posts.
Re: SU H4 choke pin and distance piece
Hi Ronnie,
The approximate length and diameter would be very helpful thanks and also the length of the throttle cable seat on the aircleaner side of the abutment plate. As I mentioned before, the one I have to copy has been sawn off.
So, if you could help with the following, I would be most grateful.
* length of distance piece
* outside diameter of distance piece
* length of back side of outer throttle cable stop housing/seat
Thanks very much

I have the same query on fitting the ST original H4 cables set up, and going to make an improved version!

Al,
At what stage are you at with your carbies? I have a set on my car which aren't quite correct and I bought a second set which probably started life as a set of AUD178T Special Tuning carbs. Between the two sets, I will have enough to build a correct set. Within a month, I will have them all done and fitted so I can take photos then for you but it would be really good to see some beforehand. Anyone?

You will not improve much over using the standard set up just use the abutment bracket for your choke, ( as indicated by Mark).970s wrote:

What exactly is your problem with the cables?

OD of distance piece 5/8"
Throttle cable stop 9/16" long 5/16" dia you could go to 3/8" if you prefer

Thanks Mark,
as we say here, a good drawings is better than a thousand words --- or pictures
