Couple of questions - motor mount brackets, headlamp rings.

Post by formulaphoto »

Hi -

I've been prepping my motor to go into the car, and realized that I have two different mounting brackets. Or rather, I have one, but not the other.

Here's the new motor, which has part of the "Cooper" bracket attached, but I don't have the stamped metal portion.

However, my old 850 motor has this larger stamped metal bracket, and I was wondering if I can just remove the square portion from the new motor and swap this over, or if the studs are different? Also, is the Cooper mount the preferred way to go? (Before someone points it out, I do have new rubber mounts to install too!)

Secondly, the replacement headlamp rings I got weren't fitting very well, so I pulled out the old ones and compared them. First, the tabs are too big and won't fit inside the support ring, and also the new ones are shallower. Any advice on the following photos? Should the chrome rings screw up tight to the metal support ring, or is it normal to have some gap?

Regarding the headlamps, it looks as if you're trying to fit sealed beam units into early bulb type back fittings? The chrome inner rims are different for each type of headlamp. Your picture shows one for the bulb type lamp and one (the shallower one) for the sealed beam.

does anyone know if the deeper chrome inner rings for the early 'bulb in the back' headlamp are still available?

Regarding the mounting bracket, you need a 12A361. I have some if you're struggling. Also you will need to replace that top stud with the correct countersunk screw.

I would source the later metal bracket as I think you will struggle to fit the early bracket to an engine with the later, fatter pulley - it would be impossible to fit the fan belt in situ with it!

also, as nick says, if you use the later bracket, convert that upper stud to the counter sunk screw - again, leaving the stud and nut in makes it an impossible job to do the belt in situ - I made this mistake years ago, and it was an engine out job to sort it......
should you wish, you can contact me on rich@minispares.com

... or more to the point...

If you have a belt snap and need to change it beside the road,
you'll probably have to part-dismantle the engine to get the job done...
(And it will be dark, cold and pissing with rain at the time!).
