I am still just interested to know WHY you do not recommend clips,
and under what circumstances this would be.
I have NEVER heard anyone else before say to not use clips....
Example #1:
1) Someone says don't use clips. They don't say why, even when asked...
2) Someone else decides to not use clips as a result, without questioning this.
3) The same someone else then drives his car at 70mph (approx) down
the motorway, when suddenly one of the hoses pops off. From experience
of a split pipe, I know that it takes only about 20 seconds to empty the sump.
(The oil will be messily distributed all around the engine compartment and
down the road for the benefit of other road-users...).
4) The same someone else now has a trashed engine.
(And a mamoth clean-up job to do on the engine compartment)
(He also faces being sued in the courts for causing a 100 car pile-up
caused as a result of the gallon of oil that was left all along the road,).
I remain ignorant as to the reasons why clips should not be used...

Many people don't want to use jubilee clips because they are ugly and some think they will come off.......really, they dont come off at the pressures we use. I crimp my hose ends.

For example #3:
I have worked on the railway for 6 years and only just found out recently
why "they" say that we should wear our Hi-Viz jackets with the zip done up.
Before, I did NOT wear my jacket with the zip done up, purely because I
was told "do-it-up-because-I-tell-you-to".
The reason is that on the front of the jacket, there is a reflective 'V' shape,
and on the back, a reflective 'H' shape. In the dark, track-side, someone
can see which way you are facing which could be very important if I am
about to get run over by a train. If I am facing away from an oncoming train,
the driver will more than likely sound the horn to alert me of his presence.
I am now more concious of having my jacket done up. I don't have to
remember "why" anymore as I have been provided with a logical explanation.
The moral of this tale is this:
A few extra words go a hell of a long way towards helping people retain
useful information.

Slightly off topic, but as a cautionary tale I've seen a couple of major failures with Mini oil coolers in the past few years:
- my 1971 cooler split where alloy boss with threaded portion joins to the cooler body
- identical fault occurred on very original 1974 Innocenti Cooper about 6 months later
I was lucky, had been on a long run and was parking the car up. I noticed a small drip of oil from the front just as I was reversing into the garage. Upper part of the front bumper lip coated in oil and it was coming from the fractured cooler. The guy with the Innocenti was not so fortunate, dumped all of the oil and needed new crank and at least 2 new rods.
So as well as getting the oil hose connections right, the other suggestion I would make if you are running an original aluminium bodied oil cooler is to check very carefully on regular basis for any sign of fracturing or oil weeping from around the area where the threaded bosses join the cooler body - this is an alloy weld and I would suggest that with age and vibration they will probably time expire at some point...
And for me the worrying part is that if this joint fractures when you are driving, then I don't think you will have any indication of what is happening - until the oil level has fallen below the level of the gearbox feed pipe going up to the oil pump. Only then will the oil pressure drop (probably to zero) and you have not a lot of time to react before the crank is gubbed. I am not in the habit of driving along looking at the oil pressure gauge all the time and there is no oil pressure warning light fitted...
I did not refit an oil cooler to the 1971 car, it does not have a sumpguard and I have found that the oil pressure holds up well even after a long fast run.

OK, so this is the FIRST mention of a pressed/swaged/crimped connection...Vegard wrote:They CAN come off. A pressed coupling cannot. Nuff said.
I totally agree that clips are ugly and I don't like them either, but all my hoses are
bog-standard push-fit and need clips.
CONFIRMATION: Because clips are ugly, Vegard reckons it is best to use the
swaged type connections as these do not require clips. (And I totally agree, but
I have never got round to replacing my clipped pipes with swaged ones).
This is not the same as:
"Do not use jubilee clips"... which did not translate too well on this occasion.
