Re: John Rhodes Autobiography
The Whitmore interview is interesting as regards his approach, never mind the Steve McQueen story..
What's the score with grille buttons on early Cooper Car racers? I have seen some skinny ones on one or two cars and we have done our own version in stainless as I'm not a fan of the type that squash the slats
This was some I found that gave us the basis to work with

Re: John Rhodes Autobiography
Can someone talk me through the early type front valances on 'S's.....?
Incidentally, possibly a warning to us all.......some bloke arrived at my front door yesterday evening asking if he could see my racer. He had tracked me down using Google , Facebook and the internet and was offering to confirm the car's provenance and authenticity purely from just a "nosey" (his words) point of view.
Fortunately the car was at the menders having it's LHS straightened out after my....(ahem) moment at the Classic last month.
However, without even seeing it he was confident that what I own is at best a "Trigger's' Broom" and at worst a total re-shell job and not at all what I thought I had.
After carefully noting the reg number on his car and making a mental note of his hair/eye colour, height, weight, etc....I bade him a polite farewell.....then re-checked the security of YMJ's usual home!
Be careful what you post about yourself and what you own out there!

That sounds a bit worrying, not sure I'd have been so polite either! Any clues to who it was???YMJ wrote: some bloke arrived at my front door yesterday evening asking if he could see my racer. Front panels on early S's were essentially the same as any Mk1 and had a full skirt until about the change point for hydro, which was in around August '64.

Re: John Rhodes Autobiography
Definately, and the nut needs outing so it doesn't happen to someone else. We had a long conversation on the MCR forum resisting the idea of compulsory 'real life' user names, and this is exactly what us 'objectors' wanted to avoid! Totally loony behaviour!

I've checked him (Dave) out further and he's kosher, but just really (too?) keen on Mini history, as we all are to an extent. But how many folks of dubious character are there out there making a portfolio of nickable stuff?
When I told my brother about this last night, he told me he was sure....many years ago.....a mysterious van followed him home from 60 miles away, on his way back from a bike rally on his Laverda Jota. He lay awake all night and the night after listening out for suspect bangs and noises.

Re: John Rhodes Autobiography
It's probably quite easy to become paranoid about security , but for someone to knock at a complete stranger's door solely to criticise their car doesn't sound particularly "kosher" to me.

you clearly haven't heard of the new MCR initiative then
a group of middle aged men prowl the county wearing brocade berets, hunting down owners of Coopers and 's's - once they have found a car, they will interrogate the owner and inspect the car....
as long as your 'papers' are in order they will let you go,
its part of the new world order, comrade

Don't get me wrong, Pete.....my sources all agreed that he's an arsehole......but harmless all the same.Pete wrote:It's probably quite easy to become paranoid about security , but for someone to knock at a complete stranger's door solely to criticise their car doesn't sound particularly "kosher" to me.
