What sort of information are you after? (I serviced a Gp2 Escort GT on some home Internationals, including the RAC, in 1972)

Oh that could be very useful.

First of all, I need to know when they started using aluminium bubble arches. Or even fibreglass ones. I really like to fit these to my car, but I need to prove that they did not just use steel.
My car is intended for the track, but I guess the rally guys were also keen on shedding weight..

Thanks :)

The material of "wheel arch extensions" was never mandated in general Appendix J "freedoms". This is one of the nonsenses of the "prove used in period" that pervades historic racing and rallying. Later on (1971?) a 5mm arch extension "freedom" was incorporated into Appendix J Group 2. Initially, under the new for 1966 Appendix J, there was nothing more than an "understanding" with the FIA that the new regulatiions for 1966 that were more explicit regarding covering the wheels/tyres could be interpreted in Group 2 (and 5) by adding arch extentions. Minis (initially Cooper Car Co Gp5 cars) led the way for the first BSCC race of 1966. The works rally Minis first had them on the Circuit of Ireland, Easter 1966. They were later specifically homologated for the Cooper S in Gp2, so that the "freedom" could be used on top of the existing extensions but Ford only really copied that much later on with Mk2s.
There were "arched" 1300 Escort GT rally cars early on as well as the Broadspeed BSCC race cars (the latter strangely only using front arches in 1968, the first year of the Escort) but to prove specifically that fibreglass and aluminium were used on GTs is more difficult. What years are involved?

Hi Vegard,

I´ve recently built a Ford Escort Mk1 with arches (not strictly FIA) and have some FIA Papers if you need. Please drop me an e-mail and I send you what I have...

Best regards Alex

Damn, I never saw these pictures until now. What a beautiful car Alex.
Is that a standard 1300GT Gearbox you're using?

I'm after such a box for a RHD car if anyone knows someone. The starter is on the other side on the RHD ones.
