Shill bidding, behaviour widely out of whack with contract law, turning up and haggling, etc, etc. We are not in Morocco!

Online sales are not just "something on the computer" they're as mainstream as buying something in a shop and it's about time the rights and responsibilities of all of those involved were enshrined in law and that law having some teeth.

I have met some fantastic people selling online and the world is a better place for it, but this has had it's flavour spoiled by cretins, chancers, gypsies and every variety of vermin possible. Rant over

Cheeky sod, that was mine and I certainly don't do shenanigans!! The under bidder had about 20 bids trying to win it but ran out of time. Both were from abroad.

I've sold quite a few mk1 binnacles over the years usually for about £100 but that one proves if there are two people that want something enough it can get silly.

Personally I'd buy one of Bob's repro's all day long.

Because of the cost of getting things shipped to South Africa, and also because many sellers won't sell to buyers outside of the UK (which I don't understand, as Steve1071 has proven) I don't buy a lot via ebay, but I am keen to find out how to spot when an item is being "shill bid" up. On this car for example, the second last bidder at 19,501 GBP has only a 16% bid history with the buyer, and again, as Steve has pointed out, even if the buyer has 100% bid history with the seller (what does 100% bid history mean?) then the bid could still be legitimate, as is possibly the case with the winner of this auction? I'll agree that the price is astronomical though!

100% bid history means that the bidder has only bid on that specific sellers items in the last 30 days. Of course if you haven't bought anything else in the past 30 days it will be 100% on your first bid.
If you see the buyer has bid on multiple items and still has 100%, something fishy may be going on (then again they might have a lot of items the buyer is interested in)

Of course it does happen occasionally, it's bound to, but ebay is a MASSIVE Market place & with such a huge market the price of a desirable item is bound to be bid up quite legitimately.

The sort of cars & parts that most of the people on here are interested in are fairly difficult to find & are mainly sought after by "men of a certain age" who have a bit of disposable income to spend on re living their youth. This is a much more salient reason for a lot of high prices in my mind than shill bidding is.

I agree , some sellers panick ,with few bids on a good item ,so get a mate to put a bid on, to get it moving ,but don't put the high bids on at the end .most buyers now use bid scheduler as to not bid stuff up .and this often leaves the seller giving in to the how much to buy it now offer, as they are worried it might go for a pitence,. if Ebay didn't charge for reserve price it might not happen as much

I agree. Yes it does go on (maybe more on cars perhaps than parts?? ), but I was bidding on a set of DSN Billet Alloy bonnet hinges which retail at 40 quid or there about. I set my max bid at 20 quid as I wasn't really worried if I didn't get them, and then forgot that I had even bid. When I got the email to say I had been outbid and didn't get the item it had sold for over twice what they retail at.

Again I was selling a bootlid badge for a Hillman Avenger Tiger about a year ago that I found in my garage (my dad had a Tiger years back that he eventually scrapped). It ended up as a proper bidding war with about 20 minutes to go and sold for over £70!

I reckon a lot of people get into a "I-must-have-it" mentality and get blinkered to the actual value of the item.

I quite often notice that bids go up really quick on some cars until just below reserve and then stick for a while . That doesn't seem regular. It's fair to say that Ebay does rely on seller's being honest and not getting their own auctions ramped up, which is easy to do and isn't normally so important nor do-able in a real life auction. I do suspect that Ebay auctions are ramped up and that 2nd chance offers are regularly used let's put it that way! Maybe I'm just a cynical old git but having been ripped several times recently buying stuff online (and only online!) you do tend to get that way! You just can't beat seeing parts/cars in the flesh and doing a deal face to face even if you find the bits on Ebay to start with!

The best clues for hints of shill bidding are a low or 0 count on the bidders feedback, if they have bid on the sellers items before, and if the bidder has a number of bid retractions.

Selling by auction is a lottery. Recently I have sold similar items, sometimes they get a good price with a few bidders, and other times they get one bid and sell for the starting price, it's just who is bidding at the time and when the listings end.

By the way, if you are selling, having you items end on a Sunday at around 8 to 10pm GMT is best (beer and bidding is good for sellers). Ending stuff on a week day morning is not good . But if you are buying then it is obviously the other way round.
