TBH, I don't use any of my cars enough to have been able to measure this for a long time. But I know that in the 1960's consumption of 500 miles per pint was not considered outrageous.

my mini sprint absolutely consumes oil - although most of it leaks past the pot joints

the record for oil consumption however is the original 1430 that was in the er' when I bought it.

that was using a about a pint a day - it would empty its sump in less than 200 miles - it really smoked bad and stunk of burnt oil

it got so bad that I had to set off last from work on a night, as all the other lads complained that they could smell it all the way home otherwise.

it was really bad

Sounds a resonable amount, mine was using more than that to and from Blyton this year but it appears that the dipstck was lying and I was overfilling it, I have just done the 2nd oil and filter change it it took 5 litres (1040) and doesn't hit the bottom mark of the dipstink it had, and only just hits the bottom mark with the older 850 dipstick. Might be worth checking you are not overfilling?

a lady once came into work and said that she had checked the oil and there was none on the dipstick, and what was she to do?

I offered to sell her a longer dipstick

Thanks

For you're replies as whenever I ran a mini in the 70 they used oil at about 400/500 to the pint and as a mechanic for leyland/BMC we tried alsorts coard rings alsorts but even gold and silver seal engines were no better so when I rebuilt the motor for my mk1 in the new millenum things haven't moved on good to know really 500 to the pint lol

I've got about 800 miles on my 1275 A since oil change. Not a drop under it and not down a drop on the dip-stick

( Mind you, this is in a Midget....so no diff leak, pots, gearbox to leak from )

When I was running the 1330 engine without exhaust valve seals it was getting less than 100 miles per pint on motorway runs when the engine was getting really hot.

I now fit seals on exhaust valve guides as well as inlets, and in mixed motoring I am about 500 miles per pint.

I have read that back in the 60's BMC would only consider warranty claims for the Cooper S if the oil consumption dropped below 100 miles per pint... but not sure if that is a mini urban myth.

If a classic car doesn't have an oil leak it means there is no oil in it!
