Just shows how many works rally cars were wiped out, not just by the works but in private ownership (no offence Ronnie! ).

Paddy testing at Silverstone...

Going back to the crashed CRX 89B, that ended up in a Mk3 shell didn't it like EBL 56C did?

Helpful police officer is looking the other way regarding the lack of roadworthiness on the crashed OBL! What are the tyres on it?

Goodyear Ultragrips - often called German Ultragrips.
Brilliant tyres that worked well on tarmac and loose but were a forest tyre.
Their tarmac tyre, also superb, was the Goodyear Rally Special.
Both were 165 x 70 x 10's
Of course neither of these tyres are made any longer.

I Used to run Utragrips on night events, tried it with 175 x 70 x 12s on the front (hence the high arches) for abit but i could never get it to my liking

Interesting photos, thanks for posting. You don't see many like that, it would be good to see more of ex works cars from the 70's and 80's. It's all part of the cars histories.

IIFR the 165/70-10 Ultragrips became available in 1972/3. The Mini size was a "German Ultragrip" only. I used them on the 73 Welsh and they were a vast improvement on Dunlop SP44s on forest/gravel (but probably wouldn't have been on snow).

13" size as used by Ford works team on Cortinas from 65(?), certainly 66, and initially on Escorts was originally "Ultragrip" in a different pattern (only very occasionally called "English Ultragrip"). German Ultragrip became available to them before the 10" size was introduced and was much discussed but from what I observed rarely used by either Ford works or private entries.

We all know BMC works used Dunlop racers from a very early date but Ford had to rely on "Rally Specials" at best (a road tyre) for many years after because Goodyear would not sanction use of their racers on the road (too thin side walls). This explains a lot of Abingdon Mini's good performance against works Lotus Cortinas on tarmac.

I acquired a NOS set of Ultragrips that had been stored " in the dark " so not perished last year. Still had Goodyear stickers on them, and came with Goodyear heavy duty tubes, still in original packaging. Surprisingly good on the road ( though not E marked )
