Hosting Images on Photobucket

After all the adware in recent years, I am now officially fed up with Photobucket! $399 just for sharing some pics that was free until now will mean that I stop using it. The Dutch company hosting my VPS seems to provide webspace of 1TB for FREE. I will dive into this... and hope for Photobucket that they haven't killed their own business...

Edit: It turns out that this 1TB of webspace is not trivially shareable with everyone as it is coupled to accounts. A smart IT specialist could probably find a way around this by connecting it a website hosted at the same company, but this is beyond my knowledge level. It could be a solutions for the whole Mk1 site, but it would mean migrating everything to a different hosting company (or webhosting, this one actually offers 100GB for 15 Euro per month, 50GB space costs 8 Euro a month).

It's great, threads I've maintained and kept update for getting on a decade now are going to be almost incomprehensible in a few months time and, best of all, I'm a paying member of Photobucket. There's no way I can justify the amount they're asking for image hosting. The £2 or so per month is fine, I don't have an issue with that, but a £400 per year fee for the same service is just daft.

For anyone who relies entirely on the online hosting service to keep the photos and hasn't got them kept elsewhere, what PB have done is dreadful. They can claim they warned people and I did receive the 'there are changes to your account' type message and it didn't jump out at all that they were suddenly cutting services like they have. It was brought in very sneakily with the minimum of attention drawn to it.

Thing is, are they really losing trade to their competitors by doing this? If you weren't paying for Photobucket before then chances are you weren't going to pay for it in the future and the only way to get money out of you was ad revenue. If you use an adblocker, they don't really even get that so much, so they really were giving people something for nothing.

On the flip side you can upload images to Twitter or Facebook and hotlink from there into whatever build thread you're keeping. This is something I've done on occasion when PB has been down and, so far as I can tell, those links are still active and legible for build diaries and tutorials.

The one worrying thing about PB's decision is that it gives a vision of post Net Neutrality internet services with every site you visit demanding their pound of flesh. This in turn will restrict the flow of information and community that has been enjoyed for the last twenty years or so purely for the profits of those with the clout to control things. Let's hope it doesn't actually come to that and we can continue to enjoy an affordable internet for many more decades.

Yeah i would be happy to pay a month/annual subscription/donation to use the forum and hosting service,
that way as BLT says the pictures would always remain with the forum

Its a massive resource for so many of us that makes these forums so valuable
.... and its just been pulled.
I think this may now be the time to charge a small fee if that's what it takes to provide the
storage to protect this resource.

This is a fantastic forum and I have learnt a considerable amount from it.
There is an imense range of knowledge here and many posters go into great
detail in order to help others understand complicated concepts<SNIP>

I have just discovered a free way to embed pictures that some may not realise they can use. If you are using Windows 10 you can sign up to Microsoft OneDrive. The free version allows you 5 GB of storage, plenty enough if you only upload small image files. There are subscription levels available, some of which give you Office 365 in the package.

I have just uploaded some pictures from Beaulieu which are very large hi-res images, and just like Flickr, you can post images in various sizes. Also like Flickr, each image has its own url, so uploading multiple images takes longer than fuctupbucket, but no much longer.

Here's an example of the three resizes available.

Up until a few months ago I used DropBox to host and add photos to this and other forums. It was dead easy, drop an image in a 'Public' folder on my machine, right click and copy the web link. I also used this facility for work to transfer larger files to customers. Good old DropBox have disabled the 'Public' folder so now none of my links work and to access them you need to have a dropbox account. If you search the net there are some very unhappy people out there. I tried one of the Photobucket type services but it was a pain in the @rse so I ended up doing what Mark said and setup a folder on some webspace we have at work and access that via Fetch. We now use WeTranfer to send large files to customers.

theminiforum (TMF) have managed to restore some of the photobucket images. They load once as the error images, and then load again as the correct ones. Not sure how they managed to sort it?

Google accounts can be used as well

if anyone has a gmail account they automatically have 15gb of space they also have access to google drive this is where you store your images

The only downside is you cannot embed an image in a post with just google drive you need to create a permalink, very easy though.

Perhaps I should have mentioned in my original post, if you copy the link from your hosting site you do need to place it between the [ img] ... [/img ] bracket thingies. Clicking the img button will make these appear in your posting text.

Testing Flickr uploading






Well that works OK, just not so quick when uploading multiple images.

By the way, Flickr gives you 1 TB for free, so it will take a few years before that's used up. I will not be uploading any more stuff to photobucket. Hopefully all my links will still work until my subscription runs out next year and the idiots/extortionists that are running fuctupbucket will have a change of mind.


Just uploaded my Cadwell shots to flickr. Loading time was similar to fuctupbucket, but album creation was slightly different but easy enough to work out.

The galaxie was at Cadwell today and I can confirm that it is indeed the business.......

Just seen this on another forum but not tried it myself. Allows you to see any photobucket pictures as normal.

Download this Google chrome extension :

Once installed, Click on settings, then extensions

In the item 'Custom Stylesheet & Script', click options and add the below script in the javascript box then hit the 'update extensions' button
