Well since our setup are almost 100% identical, I asume your car behaves very simelar to mine.

The reason JanSpeed did it on my car, was the relocation of the engine, plus the fact that the standard / top engine steady bar was removed.

It's been a long while since I posted any updates on this resto. Truth is, I've been slacking, a lot.
Been up to my eyeballs with work, keeping the missus sweet etc. :|

At least one bit of progress on the mechanical front is the return of my half engine which should give me some incentive to "extractum digitalis" and get on with the job.

that's a metro round breather you have there, the fan will run very very close to it, if it doesn't catch it.

you have to space the fan away from it to be safe, which in turn pushes the fan very close to the radiator.

with you skills, you should flatten it down so it looks like the later rover ones, just cut the canister down and weld a falt bit to the outer edge

a bit of work now will save heartache later!!!
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

Your advice will be well heeded Rich. The cover came with the 1300 GT block, it still had the gold paint on it, but it probably won't be used due to some tea bag areas.
I'll have precious little room to play with in that area due to using a big alloy rad so might put a plain cover on and use a breather on the flywheel housing and or the rocker cover.
There's a few ways to skin this particular cat. ;)

Very nice, just out of interest what colour have you used on engine.

The motor came back from the engine builder like that. I didn't expect to see any paint on it so it was a pleasant surprise. :o
It looks like BMC engine green to me, but there's a hint of something else in it.
I'll ask Dave when I see him next.

@ Georgek. Didn't get much sense from the engine builder with regards to the engine paint.
It seems he has 2 suppliers and he wasn't sure which suppliers paint he used. Will dig some more for you.

Time for an update on the resto methinks.

Front subframe fitted and most of the running gear on.

Rear beam in situ and most of the running gear on.

Seem to be going backwards with the gearbox rebuild though. :(
I've scrapped 2 casings due to the 3rd motion bearing housing being "oversize". Managed to source another box though and should have the lump back together soon.

Thank you Jens.
Yes, the gearbox issue is annoying. I had an associate check the boxes I had and he was ringing me up and saying, "get me another, this one's sh$t".
At least I know the box will be a goodun when it is eventually built. ;)

Another issue i had was with one of the front hubs. Everything except for the hubs and grease nipples was brand new. When i tightened up the CV nut there was a lot of play in the bearings.
I tried another couple of CV joints, but the problem persisted. :?: I eventually pulled the hub off and checked to make sure the outer races of the bearings were fully home. They were. :?: :?:
I then compared the spacer (supplied with the kit) with the one that came out and found this.

Image

The "new" spacer is the one on the left. Replaced it with a good old one and the jobs a goodun.
That will teach me to assume everything in the new bearing kit is spot on.

Mhuffy is coming together very well. Liking the rear beam set up - nice route to take. Have been considering it myself for the Traveller when it gets an overhaul this winter. Did you have any issues or problems to overcome to fit or was it a nice straight forward install?

Cheers for the comments Ian.

The aim with this resto is to try and lose a bit of weight on the Woody. Will be interesting to see what the end weight will be when it goes on the corner weights

The beam was a left over from my old rally Mini and I think it was a Speedex type. When I had it i had to modify the small box section stiffener to make room for the exhaust,ie; chop it in the centre bash it up higher and add an exhaust mounting bracket.
I did manage to break one of the inner radius arm brackets during an event though and when i checked the other side, that one had a break in it as well, but hadn't snapped off.
I welded them up and added gussets and never had a problem with them again.
I've tidied it up a bit more and added more small box to stiffen it up and welded on a decent exhaust mounting bracket.

It's a suck it and see mod sticking the beam on a Woody. It should work. I hope.

Ok - interesting mod indeed. I'll probably just stick with the subbie but am going to drop it out over the winter to do any repair work above if necessary and rebuild the frame. Still would consider the beams on the market if they'd fit the Traveller.

Looking forward to seeing how the rest of your project unfolds.

Hi Jens. Far too many distractions and a severe lack of Mojo are amongst my pitiful excuses for not getting on with the re-build.

I pulled the pedal box out and modified it by adding a later disc brake pedal for the "better feel" and while I was there I added a bracket for the brake switch..

Image

There was a huge difference in the heights of the old and new pedals, but something else I noticed was the angle of the actual pad compared to the older (drum) pedal.

Image

Made a start on the wiring. The donor loom came out of a late Clubby estate, but still needs modifying to accommodate some of my intended ideas. I'm trying to keep the engine bay reasonably clutter free, so the main loom is behind the dash, out of view.

Image

In my effort to be different I've complicated matters by trying to replicate a "Motortune" dashboard. I'm crap at fibreglass so it will have to be made from another material.
I've made an alloy mock up and have basically lost interest, again. :|
In my collection of steering wheels is a nice 13" early flat Motolita, but I can't use it because I'm unable to have a clear view of the instruments in my "new" dash.
So I have had to revert to using a 15" wheel to be able to see said instruments easily.

Image

I really should pull my finger out. May 4th is not far away.

A bout of Mojo overload today culminated in the engine bay being just about ready for the motor. :o
Need to finish the brake lines and swop some manky looking bits for new replacements.

Thank you mark, it's getting there.

Finally finished laying on some dash vinyl. I've only been at it for 4 months.
My first attempt at it is just about passable. It's by no means perfect.
