This is how the other cover fixed the wire to the neck.
Tab was just folded over the wire.

If the steel cap was still around till 64 ish....this would mean the early 1071 would have had them as well.
However, I just looked a picture of 731 HOP. and 732 HOP....early 1071's and both have the plastic cap!

Polarsilver wrote: Tue Nov 14, 2023 11:07 am Just say-in that A35 photo..the bit that secures the filler cover cable does not match the design of a 997 Rocker Cover .. the 997 Filler Cap Cable fits into a slot on the neck of the oil fill tube and the small cable has the ability to slide along the length of that slot within a very small bracket that is secured "on an early 997 Cover" by 2x Rivets onto the filler neck .. ( it all works a bit like one of those security chains fitted inside of a house front door) ..
Does this reveal now prove that i have become a proper "Rivet Counter"
Probably a good idea if Dermott can post a photo of this cable bracket that is located on the oil filler neck on his 997 Rocker Cover.
Thanks for the correction Norman :D ....definitely five gold stars in the rivet counter stakes
:D
As requested
This is what Norman is referring to.

Hiya Dermot,

Thanks for all the pics, that’s great! The cover with the two rivets looks like it might be just what I’m after…

I’ll send you a PM.

Cheers :D

Here is the rocker cover that I believe is correct for the 61/62 period minis.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dermott, thanks very much for the picture. That’s the ticket!

I think if you use this one for your Traveller you’ll need to re-shape the rocker cover breather, so that’s it’s pointing to 12 o’clock. I could well be wrong, but I believe only the earlier Cooper cars had this particular angle to support connecting the breather hose to the air filter.

If anybody has one they can part with as per the picture above, please let me know…

All the best,

Thomas :)

Think the early 850,s also had the weird bracket with Two Rivets ;)
My 59 850 has this type of bracket for the oil cap wire .
Pretty sure it’s the factory cover .

Hello Dermott

I think the rocker cover with metal filler stops end mid 63

my late 63 997 Cooper has a plastic filler cap, and the car is unrestored

Rocker cover sorted, thanks for all of the great discussion too.

Now looking for the ‘Westwood’ steel oil filler cap with tether cable intact as per some of the images already shared in this topic. Here’s a close up for reference, just in case:

Image

Doesn’t have to be NOS, happy to obtain something used in condition similar to above if there are any out there!

The reproduction 8G612 steel caps out there just don’t seem to beat an original item for me…

I’m in AUS, but happy to ship to my family’s U.K. address if somebody has something.

Thanks in advance! :)
