Drain Plug Stripped .. need a solution.

Post by Polarsilver »

wanted the best solution to replace a stripped thread gearbox drain plug ,, i dont fancy the MS "Self Tapping Drain Plug "as the fix .. what do you guys do regards Helicoil .. Or is the best solution to Tap Oversize the Gearbox Case and then make a bigger to suit oversize Drain Plug .. is there a UK supplier of such an item ?

never had this issue in my past 52 Years of playing Mini .. but this problem came with a parts gearbox.

'Time-serts' work better than any helicoil
But you do need the tools to do it.
Some one on here will have the correct size.
I don't otherwise i would gladly loan them to you.

I'm sure Spider will be along to add detail to this, but....

You can drill and tap out the hole to M20 and then drill and tap an M20 bolt to accept the standard drain plug (5/8" UNC) - effectively making a nice little conversion bush.

Oz thanks for the offer.. I had a look in my selection of Taps & have found a 20mm Tap & 5/8 UNC Tap the size for the sump plug.. so am going to give the Insert a Sleeve method a go as that seems to be a good solution .. will locktite the 20mm sleeve into the gearbox casting as i can see the wrong bit turning out when it comes to draining the sump... will update on the outcome.

Ever thought of making a LEFT hand threaded 20mm insert? With a standard RIGHT hand threaded drain plug?

Left hand threaded taps are available from Totness Taps and Dies who used to be Tracey Tools based in Dartmouth in the deepest, darkest depths of Devon.

This is something I always fear. Can I assume that the box is out of the car Norman? As a Brit-Biker, I've always been a big believer in Helicoil but some just don't trust 'em.
