Thought For The day

Post by mk1 »

As a child in the 70s, I thought the telly program 'Out of Town' was the most boring and dull thing imaginable.

...in the shed today, I reached for my favourite jam jar full of used screws, and released I have become Jack Hargreaves.

Thanks for reminding me! I used to watch it on a Sunday morning with my dad as he liked fishing which was often featured, as kids we already knew of Jack Hargreaves as being one of the presenters on the childrens TV programme "How?" .....which was back in the day before childrens TV in the UK was mostly replaced by all the imported American stuff of today.
I wonder if 'Talking Pictures TV' could find 'Out of Town' in the tv archives for a repeat run... :D

Haha! as a child we never had Electricity in the house so didn't see any of those programs in the early days,
if they were even a thing back then? I was born in the late forties and thirteen before we had electric and
a TV I can't remember what was on back then! probably accounts for the amount of YouTube how to do it
videos I watch now a days .

As you probably know there are quite a few full episodes available on Youtube. The algorithms that notified me about them seem to think I must be an old git. I can't think why.
They are a good watch and Jack was a lovely bloke.
I know it's rose tinted nostalgia but it's heartwarming stuff.
He's not a bad role model Mark, but I don't think he knew much about Minis!

You say that, but as a presenter for STV he is the only person I know of who did an "in depth" interview with Daniel & Bunty Richmond about their work at Downton.

Ha! I've been watching a few "old country" episodes over the last few months. They popped up in my Youtube feed.

I can remember when it came on TV as a kid. Used to think is was a yawn moment and time to head out for a ride on my bike/skateboard/start a fire/build a tree house etc. Strangely captivating now though!

To be honest, you haven't achieved full 'old duffer' status until your jam jars of old screws are held UNDER the shelf by the lid being screwed to the underside of the shelf. That to me is 'old man in a shed' Nirvana.

I was looking a a lovely old biscuit tin in a proper old fashioned charity shop the other day (you know the ones for wee obscure charities like a local hospice that are more like a Jumble sale, not these slick British Heart foundation / Cancer research ones with a unified corporate style) and was thinking 'Ooh, that would make a lovely tin for all the odds and ends - the weird nuts and bolts you kept that will be handy one day. Far more character than an old ice cream tub'. And The I realised I'm 50 this year, and maybe it's not just a number after all.....

Unbelievably, I actually own one of these biscuit tins, full of old electrical connectors and lengths of flexible plastic pipeing and tubeing. Loads of old lengths of wire and..... and..... Plus an old kitchen drawer full of the same never-to-be-used crap. Also got the baccy tins (never been a smoker though.....), each with assorted small sized taps plus the old BSF's for my Commando....

Does that put me firmly into the old codger bracket

Eclipse no 55 for metal work. I used this one as an apprentice to cut sheet metal, before we had disc cutters.

I think back in the day those biscuit tins were perfectly acceptable receptacles for "stuff" for people of any age. I've still got a "Victoria" biscuit tin full of those small pots of modelling paint by Airfix, Humbrol and others, some of which must now be 40 over years old. I've had that tin since I was a young teenager so I don't think those tins are associated with old codger status at all; we shouldn't be so keen to write ourselves off!

I've also got a couple of similar tins of assorted fuel system/SU carb parts and electrical bits and bobs respectively that go back over 30 years from when I shifted allegiance from Airfix to BL....

Or maybe it's the fact that I've still got them qualifies me?

JH spent a lot of his later years in the New Forest and North Dorset area, the area where I lived and worked, so a lot of the places and events he visited are very familiar. Recently I watched an old ‘ Out of Town’ where he goes on a ‘Pub Crawl’ travelling by horse and cart to many familiar pubs. One of the pubs visited was the Crown at Ibberton, below Ibberton Hill which was used for many years for Classic Trials. So recently on a fine summer evening I had a great drive across the Dorset countryside to the top of Bulbarrow Hill ( one of the highest hills in Dorset with views over the Blackmore Vale and beyond) dropping down Ibberton Hill to the pub, now called the’ Ibberton ‘ ! Still a very pleasant pub but now with upmarket dining, things have changed although life is still comparatively slow. Keeping away from the coast it was still possible to find quite roads without trippers to spin up the A Series!

Me too - my dads and grandads.
I love the Spanish guitar music that introduces some episodes.
