Blue Monday

Post by Pete »

The factory used a fair few shades of blue during Mini production off the top of my head in this sort of order? Feel free to complete the list for 80s onward …
Speedwell Blue
Clipper Blue
Surf Blue
Island Blue
Aqua
Trafalgar Blue
Blue Royale
Teal Blue
Pageant Blue
Denim Blue

I seem to think that all Minis except commercials were available in Surf Blue which was replaced by Island Blue in about November ‘65(?) on Coopers and estates but about a year earlier on non Cooper saloons? Also when did Royal Blue start and when was it replaced by Teal Blue? As early as 1970 or was it 1971?

Blue Royale Clubman and Teal Blue S….

Tahiti? Mid 1970s Pete ;)
Smoke Grey - If you class it as a blue? BMC did give it a blue classification of BU15.

If you include the "mutant" Hornet/Elf there are one or two others such as Florentine Blue and Iris Blue?

As you say. A lot of blues! :o

My old '79 Clubbie 1098 was Pageant, also used on MGs and Triumphs of the time I think...

1979 CLUBMAN 1100 HNH 38Ta.jpg

The Blue Royale on that H reg' Clubbie is very nice, did any Mk3 Ss have it as well...?

Edit : just checked Mr.Parnell's bible and Blue Royale (BU 38) is listed as a very early Mk3 S colour so that makes it 1970.

Interesting selection there. 'Zircon Blue' on that list is a name also used by Rover on their P5Bs and P6s between '67 and '73, but the actual colour is a much deeper, darker shade of turquoise than the Mini one.

It's listed as available on Mk3 Ss in the Parnell book from July '70.

Did BMC MIDNIGHT BLUE ever feature as a primary colour? My friend had a University Motors MGC GT that was midnight blue. VERY nice....., not quite black but very dark. His wife had a glacier mini with a midnight blue roof. I wonder where LPP85L is now

One of my Landcrab Morris 1800s was that Midnight Blue. 1971 I think. Don't think it was used on any Minis though.

Looks like it has been scrapped or maybe it's awaiting becoming a future 'barn find'....

I might be getting mixed up but I could swear I once had a very early Mk3 in what I was told was Trafalgar Blue, but was probably Blue Royale, they’re quite similar! The Teal Blue thing is perplexing me a little because that photo of the GT is an April ‘70 and I can’t find any other Mini in Teal that early.

When I was deliberating the colour for the new shell used for the rebuild (nearly 20 years ago already) of my first Mini, I opted for Rover Midnight Blue. Listed as a '90s-'00s colour, used on all Rover models (including Minis, but not very common). Very nice, almost black in some lights.

The Mini in my garage is a Midnight Blue 1964 Cooper S. It was a CKD kit assembled by Brittains in Dublin, the of assemblers Morris and Riley at the time in Ieland. Does this count under Pete's reference to factory?

Brittains, like many if not all of the CKD assemblers, used local paints and had often had standard colour schemes in terms of body and roof combinations. The car I have is monotone. It looks so close to black and in sunlight comes out a lovely blue.
