Mk1 Door Seals frustration.

Can i rattle this can of worms yet again.. Q Has any UK supplier today in 2023 actually sorted their Repro Door Seals that will actually fit the Mk1 without causing some misalignment to the Door Shut ?

I used mini spares mk1 seals on my latest project and had no issues with them..but it only take a small area of the aperture to be slightly out and you can have an issue..

Actually I've just changed my seals for early MBG furflex seals and they are a good upgrade as this type of seal squashes right up leaving no gaps so a less drafty door shut...this was also done at the request of Paddy Hopkirk back in the day for the 64 monte

Good tip. So the question is...as MG was part of the same BMC company in 1964 and appear to have been using better 'furflex' door seals, then why did BMC fit inferior 'drafty' door seals to the Mini? Was it down to cost maybe or just lack of joined up thinking between all the once rival companies in the group? Usually in manufacturing mass production, using as many 'common parts' as possible across a range of cars increases the supplier order quantities and therefore reduces the part/component cost.

As they were making a loss on every Mini that they produced, I imagine BMC were not too keen on up-specking them.

As they were were good enough for Paddy .. who is the best supplier of suitable "Furry Door Seals" in the UK ?

I tried Minispares seals and the door wouldn't shut without a force 10 gale pushing it. Phoenix trims do 3 different thicknesses/styles. Did the bluetac test as they recommend and ordered the appropriate size. Beautiful fit. RH side is a different size to the LH side. Go figure.

As I have mentioned before on here, I have two 64 cars with no welding. The seals from mini spares make the door stick out at the bottom and are very tight indeed. The rubber doesn’t seem to have the same give as the originals. Phoenix seals seem so much better by comparison and are very helpful regards correct sizes.

This was only an experiment mind you - the original seals are back on the cars now
