Actual 998 Chat about rebuilds

Post by snoopy64 »

Hi

I’m looking to have an actual chat (on the phone!) with anyone who can give me advice on getting my Cooper engine rebuilt, questions to ask the rebuilder, choosing a company etc any personal experience and the million dollar (almost) question , should I even do it?

pm me if you can help

Cheers

Kevin

That's a good lead-in to another question that maybe Kevin might like to consider. Has anyone had any dealings with local Oxford firm OSELLI recently?

Many people seem to be be happy with SMMT (Southam) who are now at Napton, nr Daventry, but before that I guess you need to know what you want.

I guess you have a 998 Copper. Do you want to keep it stock, or are you looking for a lot more power ?

You're in Berkshire? Bracknell Classic and Modern Engines would be a good starting point

Your having a laugh there, I only ever used them for machining ie re-bore and balancing I preferred to build my own. I did then Richard Walker worth using though he used to work there before setting up on his own but I see now his company was purchased by some one else. Last engine I built I got as a kit from MED only because I happened to be working nearby. Osselli was an Oxford Based Firm that was in Eyensham when I first went there then moved to Osney Mead. It's not in Oxford any more.
I just looked at the manual when I did my first rebuild and I can send a PDF of it if you need one.

Are you saying (previous page) that Oselli are crap - or that you are better - or what exactly......?

No when I was younger I heard some bad vibes about them and building an engine yourself is easy enough if you have the gear or knowledge. One of my friends had his S engine rebuilt by them and it ran OK but they are not the old firm I knew when it was in Osney and I worked round the corner. I would not put them down I'm sure a lot of people are happy with the work they do but you will always find problems. I must admit the work they did for me when I had a problem with a gearbox in my GT was spot on. What I meant are having a laugh is I did not think they were still operating seems they are

Southam mini metro centre SMMC 01926 815681

BUT

Got 40+ engines in a moment so be prepared to join que

Biggest problem with 998 cooper is D top piston availability, new oversize ones are incredibly rare .

You can use flat top pistons but that means you have to take a big chunk off head .

You can also modify flat top pistons to D tops but then you have to take a chunk off block
