It's not just the motorways. It's EVERYWHERE.

So, our sainted police force nabbed me for 36 in a 30 on an A road and for that I had the honour of my third speed awareness course, sitting for three hours listening to the same shit as before.

Getting there took 30 minutes, not bad for seven miles. Coming back took 40.

The Lady running the SAC asked 'what can we do to prevent accidents?'

I stuck my hand up and 'start walking everywhere'. Cue a few sniggers.

I continued. I told her I hated driving with a venom, which is true. I cannot bear it anymore. Too many cars, badly phased traffic lights, potholes, roadworks, roads closed and the diabolical standard of driving. On top of all this we have to keep one eye on the speedo, second gear at 20 mph in case some halfwit walks out into the road.

Last week would have been particularly bad as most of London and the home counties to the west were half-term .. so the Chelsea Tractor's were out ferrying their precious ones wherever they wanted to go ..

The section of M25 between J17 and J10 (and vice versa) is always bad and even google maps seems to have given up bothering to warn anyone about that bit.

(And to add insult to injury, once you got to J15, trying to head west on the M4 last Friday was bad due to "a stranded vehicle in lane one" .. that would be between the stupidly spaced relief areas then .. that needs a hard-shoulder .. ;)
The forerunner of the Mini .. the A35 .. lots of similarities except rear wheel drive. My engine contains a lot of Mini parts now and the bodyshell some Metro brake parts!

Though not quite hating it I've got to a point where my commuting car is automatic, as nice as I can afford so at least when I'm stuck it's inside something reasonable and I very rarely go out just ' for a drive' these days, there has to be a reason if it's an everyday car, or it has to be early in the morning if I'm taking something 'classic' out.

They've just introduced multiple 20mph zones around us, that speed is painfully slow in a modern, anything that is older with an amount of tuning sounds like it's doing 50 in 1st gear off cam, so you get glared at.

Rant over :D

There are major long term roadworks happening at the M25 J10 with A3, so always worth checking for road closures, etc...

M25 junction 10 - upgrading the junction with the A3 Wisley Interchange to reduce congestion, improve safety and create more reliable journeys.
Start date Summer 2022
End date Summer 2025
Cost £317 million

driving standards do get better as you head north I've found, but thats maybe as a result of lesser volumes and the more professional drivers being on the road when and where i am. Come fridays or holidays periods then its not worth the risks to be honest, so many clueless idiots its embarrassing, how the hell did they get licences to drive!!!!!!!!

All but one of them ARE south of me...
Kilmarnock is a bit of an outlier though, I wonder why that is, it does have the main route across town as a 50mph restricted dual, maybe that catches a lot out?

Queued for an hour or so southbound on the M6 just North of Wolverhampton today coming back from Cheadle, was thinking of the comments on this thread.
As a rule we don't often drive on motorways and haven't done since driving across Ireland on another boring motorway in 2018 as A roads are much quicker now, less holdups & less traffic

Currently in LA for a few months. Most of my travelling is 6 in morning and 6 in the evening.
It takes about a minute from my apartment to get on the Freeway. Then the madness starts, it certainly wakes you up. 6 lanes, no lane discipline, indication, nothing. Just a 'free for all'
The M25 ain't bad

Not sure what it’s like right now but I used to love driving in France where even the grannies drive AT the speed limit not sitting in the middle lane doing 50mph like so many do on our motorways and nowhere near as clogged up with HGVs. But they do have a habit of suddenly coning off at a 45 degree angle with no diversion  and some of the exits were a big eye opener as you approach them in the dark, unlit and turning 180 back on yourself with zero warning surrounded by high concrete curbs. Also observed some interesting bumper car action at roundabouts only to see the participants swap paint at the roundabout and both just drive off like nothing happened.

I also love driving on the Auto-routes in France but not been for a couple of years or so. Mainly toll charges but in return you get few roadworks, good road surfaces and plenty of good services at regular intervals plus inbetween them more basic picnic parking type areas. Less traffic density (same population as UK but more space!) and much better lane discipline means even the 2-lane autoroutes work far better than our congested 3 and 4-lane motorways. However in France like many other mainland European countries you do have to accept many drivers think tailgating with no braking distance allowance is the norm...

Also well worth getting a 'Telepeage' tag from Emovis Tag below to allow you to beat any queues and drive through the Telepeage lane at the Toll booths.
No more stopping to pay by card. No more trying to find the correct change. Simply fit the tag in your vehicle and drive through each toll gate — hear the 'beep' and go:-

Yep, they’re not as overpopulated / congested as we are so works much better. Our four laners just fill up and as said before you’re lucky to hit 60 on a Motorway like the M6. I also noted on the M25 drivers using the closed inside lane (due to stranded vehicles) to undertake the traffic. 🤦‍♂️ Some geezer was even stood in front of his broke down van with his bonnet up in that closed lane whilst those drivers approached his van at speed. Frightening.
