Standard wheels?

Post by kit of bits »

Hello chaps
Were all “standard wheels” 3.5 (excluding S rims)
I’m looking for something slightly wider but not S or reverse rims for my 59 car..if not I may just go minilites..

Yes, all std 10" wheels were 3.5"

I can't think of any wider ones that kept the std look.

On the other hand, during the 60's, a company called WELLER wheels offered outright or exchange standard mini wheels that were slightly modified by being ventilated with the 9x 19mm(?) S vent holes bored into the hub part. VERY difficult to tell apart from 3.5 or even 4.5" S type wheels. The good bit was that they looked exactly the same. Seems that the biggest buyers were 998 Cooper owners who wanted the S wheel look - without the faffing about.

Glad you raised this subject because with my proposed/hopefully/forthcoming 998 Cooper project, this is what I'm looking for or might have to set-up on a mill and machine.

There is a write up and photos re these Wellers in The Wheel Directory, available on this site

Look for 21A2744 wheels of the later 10'' Minis. They have a deeper offset of about 3mm that gives 6mm wider track.

I wanted some non standard rims that would not need arches for my 66SDL. Discovered that Rose Petals were designed and produced in the late 50's (I think) so that's what I bought 4.75Jx10.

10" Rosepetals were not designed or made in the late 50's. They were a design similar to the wheels used by the Cooper Car Co for their single seat racers from the very late 1950's but weren't available for Minis until around 1964. I am sure Pete could give a more accurate date than I.

When I bought the car it had S LP883’s but I didn’t like the look of A008’s .. may be the 145’s on 883’s would look better?

I stand corrected. I read an article a while back said they were a Cooper Car CO. designed wheel of the late 50's but didn't specify the size. Early /mid 60's then.

KIB, I agree, a nice early car like that wants standard looking wheels.

The standard 3.5” wheels fill out the guards nicely with 7.5” discs and spacer drums

That one is still on drums. But, yes they do, you have to fit a 1/4" or 3/8" spacer on the front to help the wheel fit over the S disk, but it looks great if you do.
