That old chestnut of engine colour - resolved?

Post by AndyPen »

Came across an old 1100 engine rear badge plate today that still has plenty of green paint on it.

My gloss paint is way too glossy but experience tells me it will fade nicely. So out of curiosity I thought I'd check the match between old and new paint. It is fair to say that I'm pretty happy about checking that.

Hi ABS, that is probably the RAL number (Mid Bronze Green). I've been buying it from these guys for a good few years now. It looks best when the engine has been run for a few times as it dulls off a bit.

First used it way back in Redruth by the way - so best wishes to Kernow ;-)

From Mk1 Performance-Conversions:

BMC "Engine Green".
"After much debate and discussion over the last few weeks. I have carried out a number of back to back tests of various different paint shades that have at one time or another been suggested as "The original" BMC engine green. I can now confirm with 100% certainty that the most commonly used colour on BMC engines was British Standard Middle Bronze Green (BS 223). Some engines were painted in a darker green that I strongly believe to be Dark Bronze Green."

I don't bother commenting on this subject anymore. There's no point.

So used to mix my own, but no longer have a solvent mixing scheme only water base nowadays. So just bought some off ebay, and was pleasantly surprised that it actually matched some of the original samples I have better than I've managed in the past. It's synthetic paint, but don't think this is a bad thing for engine paint as it's less likely to peel than 2k in my opinion.
