Post by BLACKJACKф »

When I turn my car off from running and remove the key the red engine light in the speedometer stays on when I put the key in the ignition turn to the first position the red light turns off the car starts fine.

I suspect you have a problem with the cut-out box...one of the contacts may be shorting....check that there is clearance..
Give them a nice clean with a piece of emery cloth.
Just a thought.

Mine did that when the IND wire was on the wrong terminal of the alternator

Have you changed anything recently? Is the bulb an original type incandescent?

Cut out on the control box is probably stuck on. Don't leave it like this, the battery is effectively connected to the dynamo and without the fan belt stopping it, it's trying to motor.

Try cleaning the cut out with a little bit of glass paper (cut/glass is how I remember it from the Haynes Book Of Lies)..

The cut out is the one on the right hand side of the control box as you look it face on with the lid off. The other one is the voltage regulator.

Yes you are right it is staying in the stuck on position I read up and tried adjusting the screw on the top the repair manual said to turn counterclockwise a little bit at a time and this had no effect. I disconnected the battery. now the red light on the Speedo has gone out but when the car is started/running the red light stays on all the time. Weird.

Either the dynamo is not making enough electricity or the control box is kapput.

It could also be a broken wire.

The ignition switch is another possible fault. The wire from the dynamo/control-box or alternator goes to the bulb then the other side is fed from the ignition switch when turned on .. but shouldn't be on when the ignition switch is off .. :(
The forerunner of the Mini .. the A35 .. lots of similarities except rear wheel drive. My engine contains a lot of Mini parts now and the bodyshell some Metro brake parts!
