Chrome petrol caps question

Post by UHR850 »

I have four original chrome petrol caps, now my question. On one is on the inside the name SPAFAX, on the other Westiuoo or something like that and a number T53278 and something infrond of it. In the other two there is nothing in it. Can someone shine some light on it ?

Cheers Kees

Nearly every part of every car made by BMC was supplied by at least two companies. This was supposed to help during times when one supplier couldn't supply, the other would.

SPAFAX was a general motor spares/accessory supplier with outlets in most towns. Most probably made these for BMC, Unipart and as spare parts through its retalers

Firstly I am not an expert. Secondly I'm not sure that any of the Mini caps were strictly "chrome" but more likely stainless steel.
Spafax were, for many years, a large aftermarket supplier of popular car parts. When I worked for a garage, the Spafax rep used to call in regularly with a huge catalogue of spare parts which they supplied and we used to keep a range of the popular petrol caps in stock as people were always losing them! That explains the Spafax cap. I don't recall that the original caps had anything in the way of names or numbers and I have never heard of the other manufacturer. I'm not sure that BMC would have manufactured their own fuel caps in any case and possibly they were bought in?

OEW is of course correct, all these caps are in fact Stainless, not Chrome.

Looks like Westwood were prolific manufacturers of filler caps.

SPAFAX is still going today & has been manufacturing stuff for the motor industry since the 1930's.

Just a continuation of the above, probably of no interest whatsoever....... The Spafax rep when I lived in Newbury was one Fred Enevoldsen who went on to open his own parts wholesaler at Hambridge Road. Another of life's nice people

Follow up question!
When did the MInis have these non-locking fuel caps in matching body colour?

Standard models all had painted caps throughout MK1 production.
