Hope it works OK, did one along with a friend on his mini, we used a brand new hole saw, naturally the car had just been painted before the hole was cut, great pre planning eh?, but dead easy, minimal filing, no issues with paint which was touched in on the cut edges, waxoiled then the rubber fitted.

Who's to say what the right or wrong way is. As long as the result is acceptable to the owner it's a good method.

At Theminiforum someone stated that the RHD tank position is not an exact mirror of the LH-one.
Apparently Minimania suggests following hole position --> https://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/t ... ?p=3692731
Although I shall say that due to lack of own experience I cannot say whether this is correct.

Some folks like to over complicate every possible issue.

Why wouldn't the tank holes be a mirror image of each other?

Why do RHT's fit perfectly when the holes are done as a mirror image?

This is the template offered on TMF.
TANKHole_zpsb61af260.jpg
Two words,

First word, sounds like mucking.

Seconds word, sounds like trap

As I say, some folks like to over complicate everything!

It doesn't even give a position for the centre of the hole, just 4 random points around an imaginary circumference!

I just used a 70mm hole saw. It cut though like butter

I followed the template above, cut out a 70mm circle of paper with a hole on the centre so I could mark the middle onto the car. Moved it around until the measurements lined up

I didn’t want to remove the LH tank to measure where it went so that seemed like a decent method to me

If you like I can produce a drawing with full GD & T to ensure 100% accuracy :)

I completely agree that this should heavily distort (flatten) the area outside the hole. Once that cutter starts to draw in it will want to flatten the sheetmetal to match the shape of the outer die. A hole saw is far safer I would think.
