Yep, my Grandad had one in his powder blue VW beetle - standard equipment for Grandads at that time :lol:

Not really ..many (more serious) compasses are set out like yours.

Assume that you are going straight up the page: the top scale shows NE is straight ahead while the peripheral scale shows you are heading/pointing NE...

Simples :)
