The Future of Vehicle Recycling - Cars stripped, boxed and on eBay within hours!
"Ever seen a car recycling depot so futuristic? Cars stripped, boxed and on eBay within hours! In this episode a very enthusiastic Jonny Smith was invited by eBay parts to visit what could be Europe's most advanced vehicle recycling depot. Charles Trent in Dorset together with eBay are at the forefront of car dismantling, using data and the latest tech to champion Certified Recycled Parts (CPR) that are carefully inspected, used OEM components. Why? Because by buying a fitting pre-owned OEM parts, there's far less energy and CO2 in manufacture compared to new parts, they WILL fit and the cost is far lower.
In this salvage yard tour episode Jonny also follows the full strip down of a Tesla Model S dual motor and a new 2019 Mini Cooper. The 'disassembly lines' showcase this brand new factory style method of dismantling cars for salvage and parts re-use. Within a few hours the parts will have come off the car, been catalogued, photographed, packaged, shelved and uploaded to eBay for purchase. Many of them can be delivered next. It's an impressive system, and one that champions a circular economy (and doesn't rely on supply chains of new OEM or pattern parts)."

There will never be a better method of recycling cars than going to a filthy old yard, wading ankle deep in years worth of old engine oil, where cars are stacked 3 or 4 high in precarious piles. Avoiding a clearly deranged Alsatian dog or two & then negotiating with a filthy chain smoking wreck of a human being for the bits you admit to taking off & hoping he doesn't check in your tool box or see the stuff you chucked over the wall.
The good old days

The "Scrappy" that Mark describes ..he must have had his brothers located in "every" UK Scrap Yard
Mab that is a good idea to strip sell used OE Parts .. The Gov; will be very pleased as they will be thinking of all the incoming "VAT" they did not otherwise expect

Many of the Minis stacked up in 'old school' scrapyards back in the day were be in far better condition than today's expensive ebay 'barn finds'....
Why was it the best or most needed parts always seemed to be on the top car of an unstable 3 or 4 car stack and involved a scary clamber up to the top for those brave enough to risk serious injury to claim them....

Our local “pick a part” has wasps, broken glass and plenty of inconsiderate previous people who cut wiring looms and wreck the rest of the car to get the one piece they want..

Remember spending the morning of my birthday back in the late 70s three-up taking the wing off an A40 Farina with a couple of hammers and sharpened bolster chisels given the lack of suitable cutting equipment and a disinterested yard owner. Left lots of spare metal attached to avoid damaging the wing!
The Friday night before we had driven out of an unlit car park from behind a cinema and the first thing we met was a steel post!! (We still swear it moved!!) Luckily it was body only damage and a headlamp!! Car was back on the road on the Monday to get my girlfriend to work. The following few evenings were rattle can time to try and get it to match .. well as closely as I could. I was taking cycling to my grilfriends after work and dinner, driving it to my home to our garage, prepping and spraying, then after an hour or so to dry taking it back to my girlfriend's and cycling back.
Still have a couple of scars on my left hand from getting too close to the lethal jagged edges we created!

The forerunner of the Mini .. the A35 .. lots of similarities except rear wheel drive. Mine engine contains a lot of Mini parts now and some Metro brake parts!
