Re: Metro prices
You could transplant an engine from a Rover Cooper into one and have a great little car

Re: Metro prices
The odd really, really mint one will no doubt make some decent money. But the Metro is NEVER going to have a serious following as a classic car.

Re: Metro prices
I agree the Metro is unlikely to have a serious following (probably not enough of them left anyway!) but I can remember hearing exactly those words said to me about the Mini, when in the late 1970's as early members of the newly formed 'Mini Cooper Club' & 'Mini Owner Club' we tried to enter Classic Car shows (no dedicated Mini shows back then). Show organisers were reluctant to allow in a car that was still in production and available to buy as a new car and 'traditional' classic British sports car owners did not make us very welcome or want a row of common to see old Minis parked up near them!

Re: Metro prices
I agree with you completely Martin, What I was referring to was a "Classic Car" with a mass following like a Mini, a Beetle, Golf, Escort, 205 GTI etc. There will be fantastic examples sold for good money & average examples will change hands for very little between true enthusiasts who love their cars. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. I hope my comments above didn't come over a sneery, that's not how they were meant.
There was a guy on that Mathewson's classic car auction program a while ago who had been collecting Metros for years. For right or wrong, he did come over a being a bit odd
I imagine the market is more akin to the 1100 / 1300 enthusiast than the Mini or Beetle fan. I think my 1300 is great, but I am never going to think of it as a classic like my Minis.

No, I did not think that at all Mark, I knew exactly what you meant....I just thought it funny that back in the day the Mini was still seen as a cheap and common car by many, that was unlikely to ever be a sought after classic car.....if only we had known how that would change in future years we could have stockpiled all those cheap rusty 'breaking' Cooper S projects and original parts to make a small fortune on ebay.

Re: Metro prices
Yes I thought the same about the Metro guy on Bangers & Cash.....most of the Metro collection seemed to be parked up on grass which is often a quick way of turning Metros (or any classic) into a heap of rust.mk1 wrote: ↑Wed May 10, 2023 10:03 am There was a guy on that Mathewson's classic car auction program a while ago who had been collecting Metros for years. I think the BMC 1100 / 1300 is a very underrated car partly because most of them had already rusted away terminally before they had a chance to be appreciated as a significant car of the 1960/70's by enthusiasts in any great number.....plus like the Metro many were just seen as a cheap donor car to discard as a plentiful source for replacement 1100/1275cc engines/boxes for Minis.
