Re: 1991 Cooper Mainstream Project
I'm not trying to be hard headed. Removing both sub frames and painting engine bay and boot I just pulled it out. I'm glad when I stopped to have a new one made the shop no longer carries that gauge wire. I measured and the wire portion is 11 ft long. If that's correct I'll carry on. Other wise I'll find another shop and a shorter one made. If not to much trouble a couple pictures would be nice. Thanks Steve (CTR)

After the channel on the floor, the cable just follows the subframe looping up at the front panel through a bracket terminating at the solenoid.

Thank you, I have been to the local battery suppliers only to find they are waiting for back ordered cable. The cable removed measures 11 ft long and has a few bad spots. The other cables around the shop measure only 9ft 6in but are in much worse condition. I'll repair and use what I have till better can be had. Steve (CTR)

Our fitters would regularly join battery cables on heavy wheeled vehicle. There was even a technical instruction. Strip 2" of sheathing from the end of cable and flux. 4" length of suitable dia copper pipe. Insert cable ends in and fill with lead solder. Cover join + 1" at each end with length of rubber or insulating hose. Maybe not what you'd want to do on your mini but it's got a lot of Bedfords, HI's and Land-Rovers back to base!

Re: 1991 Cooper Mainstream Project
Well,
We missed Beaulieu in the Cooper as it wasn't finished, primarily due to lots of electrical gremlins, but that worked out well in the end!

Back out with the engine, as when we did finally get it running... the timing case turned out to have a pin hole in it from where they had modified the timing case for the duplex gear.

But anyway, its all back in and running, due a tune up on Saturday coming, but it drove superbly yesterday on the way to the MOT station, dare I say it, the nicest driving Mini we have.
Few small bits to finish, gear knob, centre caps, hazard and headlight switches, and some original dash cards as the Newton ones are shit.
But other than that, its pretty much done!

Back on page 2 of this thread, Oli said that this Cooper mainstream would be finished as an every-day work and useable car.
I told the forum flock '........ don't believe him! Take my word for it, it'll end up another superb, immaculate job, just like his last one - the grey van...'
That ain't no everyday useable car Ollie. It's another work of art............ Great job

Very nice, I also failed to complete mine in time for the Moss moters 75th Anniversary Cars and Coffee event. I replaced choke and heater cables as well as all electrical switches dash and column. I pulled out our Mini 40 Sport Pac wiped it down and drove 110 miles to the event. With Swift power and a special tranny rolling along 70 mph at 3000 rpm with the air on was very nice. Ran it up to 96 mph just for a second. Steve (CTR)

Re: 1991 Cooper Mainstream Project
Thanks for the comments guys, its not turned out too badly at all, we've done maybe 250-300 miles in it so far, all trouble free. Just need to work out why the hi lo's don't lower it..... and then get the tracking set up. Really is fun to drive though, the AC Dodd cam is excellent.
