This is an interesting BMC publication, it's a reprint from 1960 of the route book for the first 1000 Mile Trial held in 1900.

This must surely be the forefather of all motoring events.

No Mini's I'm afraid, but it is a fantastic glimpse into a world that is LONG, LONG gone.

I always thought Wolseley drivers a bit odd, this might explain it!!!!!!!!!

PS The Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland did become the Royal Automobile club in 1907, so I guess this could be considered as the first RAC Rally.

Good Read .. seems that back in the day the early Motor Industry were earning good wages & there was a Premium being paid on Cars of the time . clearly these 1000 Mile Trial vehicle class entry and other regulations just got copied as the years have rolled bye.. also the regulations state that if the car had "Pneumatic Tyres" you had to have a Club Observer carried at all times..was this Observer also the first Rally Navigator?
Thanks Mark enjoyed this read also the Adverts like the roll on route Road Map. ( sat-navigation of its Day ) :D

You are welcome.

I find it fascinating how some things seem almost "up to date" a lot of the safety regs & route guidance are almost modern, while on the other hand you can still see the influence of horses, there are regular references to the "Hind wheels".

There is an excellent bit in there about Clipper Pneumatic tyres & how they performed. These being regularly patched with leather on the journey.

A real insight into the beginning of all motoring.
