Motorway Speed Limit to be 60mph In four areas

Post by mab01uk »

"The speed limit will be reduced to 60mph on four stretches of motorway in an effort to reduce air pollution.
Highways England is set to introduce the trial by the end of September to improve roadside air quality.
The move targets areas which have been identified as having high levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from car engines.
The four locations where trial will take place are the M6 junctions 6 to 7 (near Witton), M1 junctions 34 to 33 (near Rotherham), M602 junctions 1 to 3 (near Eccles) and the M5 junctions 1 to 2 (near Oldbury). Each locations is up to 4.5 miles long and the new speed limits will be operational 24 hours a day. The reduced speed limits will be assessed after 12 months to see if they are having an impact, or if the air quality level is compliant."

Most of the time being able to travel at 60 mph in those areas would be a bonus

Messing wit traffic does not reduce pollution. An interesting report came out of Scotland this week showing that particulate pollution levels did not reduce during lockdown.

https://phys.org/news/2020-09-lockdown- ... tland.html
Analysis of fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) in the first month of restrictions found little change—despite a 65 percent reduction in the number of vehicles on the country's roads.
Yet again the idiots in planning have yet another knee jerk reaction which will just hinder people from going about their business.
It's like what my painter friend Donald said to me

Weren't there temporary lower limits during the oil crisis in the early 70s?

Usually these speed restrictions actually improve traffic flow by forcing all traffic to travel at a similar speed. Travelling slightly slower and not constantly braking and accelerating also improves economy so it's not all bad.

60 would be great, we have had 50 MPH on the M4 for years now, while we wait for a “Smart” motorway........ :?

It all a bit pathetic whe you can go faster on a dual carriage way than a motorway ...

Don't even go there, we've had the same on the M23 for a couple of years, seems the construction is on a go slow as well.....
